Petr Yan vs Merab Dvalishvili prediction: Petr Yan's takedown defense is the wall Dvalishvili must finally crack
Merab Dvalishvili shot 29 times in December and landed twice; the trilogy turns on whether that changes, and whether his broken nose lets him keep chasing for 25 minutes.
| Petr Yan | -150 (58% implied) |
|---|---|
| Merab Dvalishvili | +130 (42% implied) |
- Expect Dvalishvili to chain takedowns from the opening bell while Yan counters with cleaner boxing and body work over five rounds.
- Watch the first takedown attempts against the fence: if Yan keeps stuffing them early, Dvalishvili's pace becomes Yan's opportunity.
- Yan is -155 after first showing at -160, with money drifting toward Dvalishvili. Yan's 86% takedown defense is the number that pushes back.
Twenty-nine shots, two takedowns
Merab Dvalishvili built a title reign on the idea that nobody can stop all of his takedowns. In December, Petr Yan nearly did. Dvalishvili went 2 of 29 on takedown attempts at UFC 323, Yan landed the cleaner boxing, and the belt changed hands on scores of 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47. That loss ended Dvalishvili's 14-fight winning streak.
The wrestling is still his whole identity. Dvalishvili averages 5.97 takedowns per 15 minutes across his UFC career, and two months before the Yan rematch he dragged Cory Sandhagen down 20 times on 37 attempts. Yan stops 86% of takedown attempts against him, which is what made December look so different from their first meeting in 2023, when Dvalishvili won every round on all three cards.
Yan has heard this song before. "We're ready to wrestle if we need to wrestle, and we're ready for the tempo," he said this week. He expects Dvalishvili to lean even harder on wrestling and pressure. Dvalishvili, for his part, called himself a "decision machine," and 12 of his 14 UFC wins went the distance.
Where Yan wins the exchanges
When the fight stays standing, Yan is the more dangerous man. He lands 5.16 significant strikes a minute at 55% accuracy, and he carries real power, averaging 0.53 knockdowns per 15 minutes against Dvalishvili's 0.05.
Dvalishvili's defense works by volume and movement rather than by avoiding everything; he absorbs just 2.8 significant strikes a minute. The swing between the two meetings tells the story. In 2023 Yan landed 75 significant strikes and absorbed 147. In December he landed 139 and absorbed 134, nearly even on volume, but the damage was not. Yan hurt Dvalishvili repeatedly to the body, and Dvalishvili later admitted his corner told him to attack the body when "we hadn't worked on that at all."
A nose, a back and 25 minutes
Both men made weight at 135 pounds Friday, and Dvalishvili said he rehydrated to 154. The bigger question is his breathing. He broke his nose in two places in training and declined surgery before this fight. His coach Ray Longo worries it could bleed heavily: "Can he do what he wants to do for 25 minutes? That's where I'd be concerned." For a fighter whose plan is relentless pace, an airway problem cuts at the core of the game.
Yan had lower back surgery earlier this year, which delayed the trilogy. No new fight-week issue has surfaced, and he cartwheeled after making weight, but his recovery has not been detailed beyond that.
Age adds weight to the stakes. Dvalishvili is 35, and winning would make him the oldest bantamweight champion in UFC history. Yan is 32.
The market drifts toward Merab
Yan is a -155 favorite, with Dvalishvili at +130, which works out to a 58.3% no-vig chance for the champion. Our feed first saw Yan at -160, so the small move has come Dvalishvili's way.
The case for that drift rests on Dvalishvili's history of grinding through elite strikers over five rounds. The case against it is December's 2-of-29 takedown line and a nose his own coach is worried about. Yan has never been stopped in the UFC, and Dvalishvili's only stoppage loss came in his 2018 debut, so a decision remains the most natural path for both.
The fighters
- Petr Yan (Petr Yan): Yan stops 86% of takedown attempts and lands 5.16 significant strikes a minute, the combination that took the belt in December.
- Merab Dvalishvili (Merab Dvalishvili): Dvalishvili averages 5.97 takedowns per 15 minutes but landed only 2 of 29 attempts against Yan at UFC 323.
