Abus Magomedov vs Cam Rowston prediction: Cam Rowston's top game runs into Abus Magomedov's first-round danger

The unbeaten City Kickboxing middleweight wins by smothering opponents, and the ranked veteran across from him has finished people from his back.

Quick take
  • Magomedov is most dangerous early; if Rowston survives the opening exchanges and gets on top, the fight tilts toward his volume and control.
  • Watch the first takedown attempt by either man. Neither has been taken down in the UFC, and Magomedov's guillotine punishes careless entries.
  • Magomedov is a slim -125 favorite, 53.1% without the vig. Rowston's 1.98 strikes absorbed per minute is why the price stays tight.

The danger comes early

Abus Magomedov is 29-7-1 as a pro, ranked inside the middleweight top 15, and at 36 still one of the division's sharpest openers. He stopped Dustin Stoltzfus in 0:19, and in June he dropped Michal Oleksiejczuk before finishing him with a guillotine from bottom guard at 3:25 of the first round.

The flip side shows up later in fights. His two most recent stoppage losses, the knockout against Sean Strickland and the rear-naked choke against Joe Pyfer, both came in round two. Magomedov does his damage early, and his longer fights have been harder going.

Rowston's pressure on the mat

Cam Rowston is 3-0 in the UFC and 15-3 as a pro, and he arrives on a three-fight UFC winning streak. His UFC numbers come from only 26.8 minutes, but the shape is clear. He lands 5.52 significant strikes a minute and absorbs just 1.98, while Magomedov absorbs 3.34.

Much of that work happens on top. Rowston holds control for 48% of his fight time, and 46% of his landed strikes come on the ground. Against Robert Bryczek in May he took a 30-27 sweep on all three cards and turned three takedowns into 10:10 of control. Both of his UFC stoppages came from punches on the mat.

He can also strike at range. Against Cody Brundage he picked his opponent apart from distance before finishing him in the second round.

Two takedown defenses, one guillotine

Each man has stopped 100% of the takedowns tried against him in the UFC, so one of those records will be tested. Magomedov wrestles more than his kickboxing reputation suggests. He averages 2.5 takedowns per 15 minutes and spent 716 seconds in control against Warlley Alves.

That makes Rowston's entries the key detail. He is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt, but a reactive shot against a fighter who just finished a guillotine off his back carries real risk. Expect Rowston to set up his takedowns with feints rather than chain them off exchanges.

Age, weight and the price

Both made weight Friday. Magomedov came in at 185.5 pounds and Rowston at 185, and neither drew a fine or a catchweight. The more lasting physical factor is age. Magomedov is 36 and Rowston is 31, and their reach is identical.

The market barely separates them. Magomedov sits at -125 against Rowston's +103.5, nudged slightly toward the veteran from -122.5 when our feed first saw the line. The price reflects a familiar split: proven but finishable experience against a clean, short UFC résumé built on opponents with a combined 14-10-1 UFC record.
