Alexander Volkov vs Rizvan Kuniev prediction: Rizvan Kuniev wants to drag Alexander Volkov into the clinch

Volkov lands 84% of his strikes at distance, Kuniev lands 40% of his in the clinch, and late money has drifted toward the shorter man.

The moneyline
Alexander Volkov-130 (54.3% implied)
Rizvan Kuniev+110 (45.7% implied)

Quick take
  • Volkov wants a long-range fight built on the jab and kicks; Kuniev wants to close distance, lean on him and throw knees for three rounds.
  • Watch the first clinch: Kuniev finished Tyrell Fortune with a knee from there, and Volkov's length matters far less once chests touch.
  • Volkov is -120.5 after first showing at -125, Kuniev +101. Kuniev beat common opponent Jailton Almeida unanimously, while Volkov needed a split.

A fight about distance

Alexander Volkov fights on his 38th birthday, and he will bring the same tool he has used for a decade: length. He stands 6'7" with an 80-inch reach, and he lands 5.08 significant strikes a minute at 58% accuracy. Almost all of that work, 84%, comes at distance. When Volkov wins, the other man spends the night on the end of a jab and a front kick.

Rizvan Kuniev is built to erase that. He is 6'4" with a 76-inch reach, and 40% of his landed strikes come in the clinch, where he aims 75% of them at the head. He has not attempted a takedown in the UFC, but he controls opponents against the fence and breaks them up with knees. His UFC numbers rest on just 41.2 minutes, so read them as a sketch of his style rather than a settled profile. Kuniev has said he can dominate Volkov in the grappling and on the feet. Volkov expects him to test the stand-up first and then look for the clinch or a takedown, and says he has "more technical skills."

The Almeida measuring stick

Both men fought Jailton Almeida, the division's most relentless takedown artist, and the results point in Kuniev's direction. Volkov edged Almeida on a split decision last October. Kuniev beat him in February on 27-30 cards from two judges, and he banked 395 seconds of control time in the process.

That control is the clearest sign of what Kuniev does well. Both men have also faced Curtis Blaydes. Kuniev lost a split decision to him, while Volkov lost a five-round decision back in 2020.

Who gets hurt

Kuniev's defense is the opening for Volkov. Opponents land more than half of what they throw at him, since his strike defense is just 48%, and Volkov is accurate enough to punish that over 15 minutes. Kuniev also admitted after the Fortune win that he tends to rush exchanges, which is exactly how a fighter walks into a long right hand while trying to close the distance.

Volkov's chin has largely held up. He is 14-5 in the UFC and has been knocked out there only by Derrick Lewis, in 2018. Kuniev has never lost by knockout in a 14-3-1 pro career, with a 7-0 KO record. Volkov's last two wins both went the full three rounds, so a decision is a real path here.

Fight week and the market

Both fighters made weight. Volkov came in at 256 pounds and Kuniev at 265, with no fines. The build-up has carried some edge. Volkov raised Kuniev's PFL past, a 2023 positive test that was later overturned to a no contest, and he said Kuniev had visited his team's camp around last December. Volkov also says he was surprised by the matchup. Who was originally linked to the fight remains unconfirmed.

Volkov is ranked ahead of Kuniev, though the sources disagree on the exact spots, and he is defending that ranking rather than chasing a title shot. The market has him as a slim -120.5 favorite, down from -125 when our feed first priced the fight, while Kuniev has moved to +101. With the margin removed, that gives Volkov a 52.3% chance, close to even, and the late money has followed the younger fighter.
