Alexander Volkanovski vs Movsar Evloev prediction: Can Movsar Evloev drag Volkanovski into deep water over five rounds?

The unbeaten No. 1 contender has won every UFC fight on the cards by taking opponents down, and now he gets 25 minutes against a 38-year-old champion who swears he won't need them.

The moneyline
Alexander Volkanovski-108 (49.8% implied)
Movsar Evloev-110 (50.2% implied)

Quick take
  • Volkanovski wants a striking fight at range; Evloev wants takedowns and long stretches of control. Whoever sets the location of rounds three through five likely wins.
  • Watch Evloev's first takedown attempt. Volkanovski stops 69% of attempts, and how fast he stands back up shapes the scoring.
  • Volkanovski -112, Evloev -108, about 50.4% to 49.6% no-vig. Evloev's 4.78 takedowns per 15 minutes is the number that makes the challenger a real threat despite the near-even price.

The takedown question

Movsar Evloev is 20-0 as a pro and 10-0 in the UFC, and he got there with a simple formula. He averages 4.78 takedowns per 15 minutes and lands 53% of his attempts. He then spends 36% of his fight time in control. Against Aljamain Sterling, a former bantamweight champion and a wrestler himself, Evloev landed just 8 significant strikes and still won all three rounds on every card, because he held 369 seconds of control.

Alexander Volkanovski stops 69% of takedown attempts in his UFC career. That is good, not airtight. His fight-week plan admits as much: he says he can be taken down and will get back up. That's a champion conceding the takedown and betting on his scrambles. Every reset favors the striker, and every minute pinned against the fence goes to Evloev on the cards.

Volume at distance

Volkanovski's case lives on the feet. He lands 5.99 significant strikes a minute at 57% accuracy, and 76% of that work comes at distance. Evloev lands 3.91 a minute, and his offense mostly serves to set up the shot.

The Lerone Murphy fight in March is the warning for Evloev and the opening for Volkanovski. Evloev stood and traded for long stretches. He landed 86 significant strikes and absorbed 89, and he won mainly because he went 9 of 10 on takedowns. Volkanovski lands more per minute than Murphy, 5.99 to 4.48. If Evloev spends that much time at range again, the champion's jab and leg kicks, which account for a quarter of his landed strikes, should bank rounds.

Twenty-five minutes and two chins

All 10 of Evloev's UFC wins went to decision, and his lone five-round fight was a majority decision over Murphy that he won despite losing a point in Round 4 for low blows. Volkanovski doubts Evloev can keep his pace for the full 25 minutes and says he will finish him inside the distance. With 11 UFC title fights behind him, Volkanovski knows championship rounds better than almost anyone at 145.

Durability cuts the other way, though. Volkanovski is 38, and his two UFC knockout losses came in back-to-back title fights: a first-round head kick from Islam Makhachev and a second-round right hand from Ilia Topuria. Evloev isn't a one-punch threat. He has never scored a UFC knockdown, so the risk to Volkanovski here is attrition, not a single shot. Both fighters made weight, Volkanovski at 144.5 pounds and Evloev at 145.

History and a near-even market

A win would give Volkanovski his ninth featherweight title win, moving him past Jose Aldo. He has won two straight since the Topuria loss, both five-round decisions over Diego Lopes. Evloev beat Lopes too, in Lopes's UFC debut, holding 510 seconds of control.

Books can't separate them. Volkanovski sits at -112 and Evloev at -108 across six books, with Evloev ticking only from -109 since our feed first priced the fight. The fight is a clash of locations: the champion's range against the challenger's mat.
