UNT Dallas vs UT Arlington prediction: UT Arlington opens its UAC era leaning on a suffocating defense

Last season's Mavericks smothered shooters and struggled to score, and the season opener against UNT Dallas is the first look at which half of that identity carried over.

Quick take
  • UT Arlington should control this home opener with defense; last season it ranked 12th nationally in defensive efficiency.
  • The Mavericks' shaky ball security is the thing to watch: UTA turned it over on 20.3% of possessions last season, 349th of 365. UTA turned it over on 20.3% of possessions last season, 349th of 365.
  • No spread or total is posted yet. Last season UTA held opponents to 26.7% from three, best in Division I.

A defense built to choke shooters

UT Arlington's season starts Monday, Nov. 2, at College Park Center, and the Mavericks bring a defensive reputation few programs at their level can match. Last season they allowed 97.9 points per 100 possessions, 12th of 365 teams nationally. Opponents shot 26.7% from three against them, the best mark in Division I.

The weak spot was fouling. Last season UTA's opponents shot 40.6 free throws per 100 field-goal attempts, 318th nationally. Getting to the line was how opponents found their best chances against UTA last season.

Offense still the open question

Scoring was the problem. The Mavericks finished last season 328th in offensive efficiency and made just 29.1% of their threes, 359th. Turnovers made it worse.

They survived on second chances. UTA grabbed 36.1% of its own misses, 31st nationally, and its free throw rate ranked 34th. Those numbers describe last season's 18-14 team. How much of that roster returns isn't clear, so treat them as a sketch of K.T. Turner's system rather than of this group.

Opening night with new stakes

This opener carries a sense of occasion. It is the first promotion of UTA's home schedule, a Blue Out, and the start of the Mavericks' first season in the United Athletic Conference after five years in the WAC. Tip is 7 p.m. local, 8 p.m. ET.

UNT Dallas, coached by Josh Howard, who also serves as the school's athletic director, is a non-Division I program, and little else is known about its roster. One caution for anyone searching odds: this is UNT Dallas, not North Texas, which also opens its non-conference schedule Nov. 2.
