Eastern Washington Eagles vs Stanford Cardinal prediction: Stanford's portal rebuild debuts against a short-handed Eastern Washington
Kyle Smith's almost entirely new Cardinal lost both exhibitions, but they open at home against an Eagles team that doesn't yet know who's available.
| Spread | Stanford -13.75 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 154 |
- Stanford's portal additions and size should wear down an Eagles rotation thinned by injuries, though two exhibition losses leave the Cardinal's cohesion an open question.
- Alton Hamilton IV against Stanford's frontcourt: he scored 26 in Eastern Washington's exhibition finale and carries the Eagles' offense.
- Stanford is favored by 13.75, down from 14.5, with the total at 154.0; Stanford returns just 17.0% of last season's minutes.
Stanford's rebuilt rotation
Stanford lost both of its exhibitions with a lineup that barely existed a year ago. Tonight the real season starts at Maples Pavilion, and the Cardinal get an opponent whose own rotation is in doubt.
Stanford brings back 17.0% of last season's minutes, so the 20-13 team from 2025-26 is a loose guide at best. Ebuka Okorie, who averaged 23.2 points, declared for the NBA draft, and Benny Gealer left for UIC. Kyle Smith rebuilt through the portal. Christian Bliss averaged 16.7 points at Delaware. Nick Townsend, the 2026 Ivy League Player of the Year, shot 46.3% from three at Yale. Austin Maurer, a seven-foot center from Seattle U, adds size.
The exhibitions were less reassuring: losses to Santa Clara and Oregon, though freshmen Julius Price and Aziz Olajuwon showed they can score. Both started each game alongside Bliss and junior Donavin Young, with Aidan Cammann and Townsend splitting the fifth spot. Townsend sat the first exhibition out of caution while awaiting a ruling in Glancey v. NCAA. An Oct. 20 injunction extended eligibility through the 2026-27 season for the players involved, and Townsend started the next exhibition, though his individual status hasn't been spelled out.
Eagles running short on bodies
Eastern Washington returns more of its roster, 26.5% of last season's minutes, but lost leading scorer Isaiah Moses and starting forward Kiree Huie. Alton Hamilton IV is the anchor. Last season he posted a 60.1% effective field goal percentage (a shooting measure that counts threes 1.5 times), and he had 26 points and nine rebounds in the Oct. 27 exhibition win over Western Washington. Western Michigan transfer Jalen Griffith shot 41.6% from three last season.
The problem is depth. Andrew Cook hurt his left hand in that exhibition, and his status was uncertain as of Nov. 1. Tavi Jackson and freshman forward Alan Gballou are game-time decisions, and Jamil Miller couldn't play his usual minutes after an injury of his own. "We've had to go deep into the bench here," Dan Monson said. A thin rotation facing a bigger roster on the road is a hard opener: Stanford's lineup averages 79.5 inches weighted by minutes, against 77.5 for the Eagles.
Threes against a soft perimeter
Last season's team numbers describe different players, so read them as coaching tendencies. Smith's 2025-26 team took 44.0% of its shots from three. Monson's defense allowed opponents 35.3% from deep, 286th of 365, and was worse inside, where opponents made 55.9% of their twos (339th).
Stanford's weakness was fouling. Opponents' free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) against the Cardinal was 40.3%, 314th nationally. If Eastern Washington is going to keep this close, Hamilton's interior scoring and trips to the line are the likeliest route.
Where the number sits
Stanford is favored by 13.75, down from 14.5 when the line was first recorded, so the early movement has gone toward Eastern Washington. The total is 154.0, barely up from 153.5. Last season's final adjusted net ratings (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) had Stanford at 13.3 and the Eagles at -2. The only meeting in the last three seasons was a 95-70 Stanford win at Maples in 2023.
Both exhibition stories pull in different directions. Stanford's losses argue against trusting a new roster to cover a big number, while Eastern Washington's injury list argues the Eagles may not have enough players to keep pace for 40 minutes.
