Montana Grizzlies vs Oregon Ducks prediction: Stubblefield's press opens Oregon's interim era against a remade Montana
Both teams return about a third of last season's minutes or less, so tonight's 18.5-point spread rests on transfers, a new coach's pressure defense and who can still handle the ball.
| Spread | Oregon -19.25 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 151.5 |
- Oregon's deeper transfer class should control the night, but a debuting interim coach and two rebuilt rosters make the final margin hard to project.
- Watch Oregon's press against Montana's new ball handlers. The Grizzlies turned it over on 20.0% of possessions last season, 345th nationally.
- Oregon is -18.5, up from -17 when our feed first saw it, and the total is 153. Only 20.7% of Oregon's minutes return.
Oregon starts over in Eugene
Dana Altman retired Oct. 7 after 16 seasons, and Tony Stubblefield takes the opener as interim head coach. He inherits almost nothing from last season's 12-20 team. Players on this roster logged only 20.7% of Oregon's minutes a year ago, and spring coverage listed Sean Stewart as the only returning scholarship player. Stewart showed up as "undisclosed" in the box score from the Stanford exhibition, and nothing since explains why, so his status is unclear.
The new Ducks come mostly through the portal. Fred Payne scored 15.8 points per game at Boston College. Andrew Meadow made 38.6% of his threes at Boise State with an offensive rating of 126.2, meaning he produced about 126 points per 100 possessions he used. Tyrone Riley IV brings an efficient scoring line from San Francisco, and Malique Ewin has been declared eligible.
The preseason was uneven. Oregon lost exhibitions to Seattle U, where turnovers were the problem, and at Utah before beating Stanford. Stubblefield hasn't named a starting five. He says players will earn those spots and that he plans to lean on depth and pressing.
Montana's shooters lose their engine
Montana went 18-16 last season and reached its third straight Big Sky Championship game. Shot-making carried it: the Grizzlies' effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) ranked 18th of 365.
The man who ran that offense is gone. Money Williams averaged 20.6 points and used more than a third of Montana's possessions, and he has moved to Boston College, the school Payne just left for Oregon. Only 33.0% of Montana's minutes return.
Travis DeCuire, entering his 13th season, still has two starters back. Tyler Thompson hit 40.1% from deep, and Kenyon Aguino posted a 117 offensive rating as a freshman. Ten newcomers fill out the roster, and the Big Sky picked Montana fourth.
Where the press could bite
Stubblefield's plan to press lands on Montana's softest spot from last season. The Grizzlies gave the ball away on 20.0% of their possessions, 345th in Division I, and they rarely made up for it on the glass: their offensive rebound rate ranked 359th. They got one good shot per trip or nothing.
The caveat is that Williams handled much of that ball, and the new guards are untested. Oregon has its own ball-security questions after the Seattle U loss. Rim protection is also unproven: Taylor Bol Bowen blocked 1.0 shot per game at Alabama, but last season's Oregon shot-blocking belonged largely to players who have left.
What the number says
Oregon was -17 when our feed first recorded the game and has moved to -18.5 across eight books. The total dipped from 153.5 to 153.
History leans the same way. Oregon beat Montana 75-61 in 2023 and 79-48 in 2024, both in Eugene. Last season's final adjusted ratings (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) put Oregon 99th in net efficiency and Montana 190th, but those numbers describe rosters that have mostly scattered. Tonight is a referendum on Oregon's transfer haul against Montana's two returning starters, with a pressing scheme no one has seen in a game that counts.
