Colgate Raiders vs Washington Huskies prediction: Washington's transfer-built Huskies open against a Colgate core that stayed
Sprinkle's third Washington roster arrives nearly new and winless in exhibitions, while Colgate brings back half its minutes and a sharp-shooting forward to test the remodel.
| Spread | Washington -14.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 154.5 |
- Washington's size of talent should tell over 40 minutes, but a new rotation that lost both exhibitions could let Colgate hang around early.
- LeJuan Watts, who averaged 22.0 points in two exhibitions, against Andrew Alekseyenko, Colgate's top returner and best shooter.
- Washington is -14.5, unchanged since our feed first saw it; the total has crept from 152.0 to 153.25.
A roster built from scratch
Danny Sprinkle's third season at Washington starts with almost nobody from his second. Players on this roster accounted for just 20.9% of last season's minutes, and the departures include Hannes Steinbach, who averaged 18.5 points and 11.8 rebounds. Zoom Diallo and Franck Kepnang both left for Kentucky.
That makes last season's numbers a shaky guide. The Huskies finished 16-17, though their schedule-adjusted rating (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) ranked 52nd of 365, far ahead of Colgate at 232nd. The new group hasn't proven it can match that. It lost exhibitions 109-91 to Boise State and 84-80 to Washington State in October.
The bright spot was LeJuan Watts. The Texas Tech transfer led Washington in exhibition scoring, and Nikola Dzepina posted 16 points and 12 rebounds against Washington State.
Colgate replaces its engine
Matt Langel's Raiders went 18-15 and bring back about half their minutes, the far steadier situation. The hole is at point guard. Jalen Cox, who averaged 17.9 points and 5.3 assists, is now at USC, and starting guard Ben Tweedy left for Manhattan.
What stays is a frontcourt that can score. Andrew Alekseyenko averaged 14.7 points and hit 38.3% of his threes, and Sam Wright added 12.3 points a night. Colgate's rotation is also the bigger one by minutes-weighted height, 79.1 inches to Washington's 75.8.
Where possessions swing
Colgate's identity last season was efficient and careful. Its effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 54.2% ranked 77th, and it turned the ball over on just 14.9% of possessions, 50th nationally. Washington did little to take the ball away, ranking 328th in forced turnover rate. If that carries over, the Raiders will get plenty of clean looks, even without Cox.
The Huskies' edge was on the glass. They grabbed 34.6% of their own misses, 65th in the country, while Colgate barely chased offensive boards at 305th. Second chances are the most likely route for Washington to build a margin this size, with Watts at 6.0 rebounds a game at Texas Tech last season.
Can Washington shoot now?
Last season's Huskies made only 31.5% from three, 315th nationally, and the lone notable returning guard, Wesley Yates III, shot 31.2%. The fix is Parker Friedrichsen, who hit 40.5% from deep at Davidson. Ryan Beasley, who ran San Francisco's offense at 4.0 assists a game, is the other piece, but he was limited in practice while working through a concussion as of Oct. 24, and no update has surfaced since.
Mady Traore had his knee drained before the season, and Jasir Rencher showed no limitations from offseason surgery as of that same Oct. 24 report.
What to watch
- The early pace. Both teams played slowly last season, Colgate 223rd and Washington 210th in possessions per 40 minutes, yet the total sits at 153.25.
- Beasley's status. Without him, Washington leans harder on Tayshawn Comer and Harun Zrno to handle the ball.
- Alekseyenko from the perimeter. If he stretches Washington's bigs, Colgate can keep this within the 14.5-point number.
