UNC Asheville Bulldogs vs Richmond Spiders prediction: Richmond's transfer haul faces a UNC Asheville team starting over
Both programs open tonight with mostly new rosters, but Richmond imported proven scorers while UNC Asheville must replace nearly all of last season's points.
| Spread | Richmond -15.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 152.5 |
- Richmond's deeper set of experienced transfers should control the game at home, though two exhibition losses, one of them 96-53 at Virginia, leave real questions about its defense.
- UNC Asheville's perimeter newcomers against a Richmond defense that last season allowed one of the highest 3-point attempt rates in the country.
- Richmond is favored by 15.5 after our feed first saw 13; UNC Asheville returns just 12.1% of last season's scoring.
Two rosters built from scratch
Season openers rarely feature this much unfamiliarity on both benches. Richmond brings back 22.1% of last season's minutes, having returned six players and added 10 newcomers. UNC Asheville returns 27.2% of its minutes, but those players produced just 12.1% of last season's points, so Mike Morrell's ninth season begins with almost no proven scoring on hand. The two programs haven't played since Dec. 29, 1997.
That turnover makes last season's ratings a weak guide. For the record, Richmond finished last season with an adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions better than opponents, adjusted for schedule) of 2.1, 144th nationally. UNC Asheville finished at -6.1, 233rd. The gap matters less than what each team added. The Bulldogs lost Kam Taylor, who averaged 18.9 points and is now at Florida State, along with the other high-usage guards and forwards who ran their offense.
Where Richmond's points come from
Richmond went shopping for production. Amon Dorries started 32 games at Bucknell and averaged 16.2 points, a center who also took threes. Jamie Kaiser Jr. arrived from Butler and led Richmond with 17 points in the Oct. 18 exhibition at JMU, hitting 3-for-4 from deep. The one holdover with a real track record is Aiden Argabright, a Preseason All-Atlantic 10 pick who posted a 128.9 offensive rating off the bench last season.
The warning signs came on defense. Richmond went 0-2 in exhibitions, falling 96-53 at Virginia and 90-81 at JMU. The Spiders showed fight against the Dukes, erasing a 14-point hole with a 17-0 run, then couldn't keep pace once JMU pulled away again.
The three-point door Richmond opens
Last season's Richmond defense let opponents fire away: opponents took 45.8% of their shots from three, the 24th-highest rate in Division I. Inside the arc was worse, with opponents making 54.2% of their twos, 306th. Much of that roster is gone, but the exhibitions suggested the new group hasn't solved it yet.
UNC Asheville's newcomers are built to test it. Kelcy Phipps shot 43.1% from three at Portland State, though in a modest volume. Khayri Dunn brings a shooter's green light from Georgia Southern, where he took 140 threes with a 23.6% usage rate. If the Bulldogs keep the score close, it will likely come from that pair getting hot.
The line drifts toward the underdog
The line drifts toward the favorite. Our feed first saw Richmond at -13, and the spread has since moved to -15.5 across nine books. The total jumped from 147 to 152.5.
One caution for anyone backing the Bulldogs late: free throws. Last season UNC Asheville lived at the line, with a free throw rate of 39.4% (65th), but made just 68.7% of its attempts, 306th. Returning forward Myles Mayfield shot 42.1% at the stripe. If this one gets tight, that habit could cost them in the closing minutes.
