Tougaloo vs Southern Miss prediction: Isaac Taveras and a free-throw-heavy Southern Miss open against NAIA Tougaloo

An exhibition-style tune-up gives the Sun Belt's preseason player of the year a first look at a roster that has to fix last season's outside shooting.

Quick take
  • Southern Miss should control this home date against an NAIA opponent, with the real interest in how its revamped rotation shoots and handles the ball.
  • Taveras against whatever Tougaloo throws at him: he scored a career-high 32 in the Sun Belt semifinal loss to Troy last March.
  • No spread or total is posted yet; last season the Eagles' free throw rate ranked 17th nationally, their most reliable source of points.

A preseason star sets the tone

Southern Miss enters 2026-27 with a clear centerpiece. Isaac Taveras, a fourth-year guard, was named Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year, and his last outing was his loudest: a career-high 32 points in a 78-70 Sun Belt semifinal loss to Troy on March 9.

The team around him draws less confidence. Sun Belt coaches picked the Eagles seventh, with 109 points and two first-place votes. Tougaloo, an NAIA program whose season ended in the NAIA tournament opener against LSU Shreveport in March, is a chance for Taveras to find a rhythm before the schedule stiffens. When these programs met before, Southern Miss won 96-77 behind a career-high 28 from LaDavius Draine.

Last season's habits to watch

Every team number here is from last season, when Southern Miss went 19-16 and finished 221st of 365 in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents). With several newcomers, those figures are only a rough guide.

The identity was getting to the line. The Eagles' free throw rate, free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt, ranked 17th nationally. The outside shot was the weakness: they shot 30.0% from three, 348th, and their 3-point attempt rate ranked 353rd, among the fewest in the country. Ball security also lagged, with a turnover rate ranked 324th. Against an overmatched opponent, whether the Eagles can take and make more threes, and cut down giveaways, matters more than the margin.

New faces in the rotation

The roster adds junior college transfers Chandler Watts (Eastern Florida State) and Cy Merrett (Southwest Mississippi), plus graduate transfer Fallou Diagne from Western Kentucky. Freshman Dorion Bowen, a 6-6 guard, brings size to the backcourt, though the staff's hope is for an impact in conference play from January, and no starting role has been reported.

One caution on timing: listings disagree on the date. One version of the Southern Miss schedule has Tougaloo visiting Oct. 28 and the Eagles at Iowa State on Nov. 2, so confirm the tip before planning around it. Tougaloo's own coaching listings also conflict, naming either Eric Strothers or Thomas Billups as head coach.

Key players

  • Isaac Taveras (Southern Miss): Scored a career-high 32 in the Sun Belt semifinal loss to Troy last March.
  • Dorion Bowen (Southern Miss): A 6-6 guard the staff hopes can contribute by conference play in January.
