Toledo Rockets vs Arkansas St Red Wolves prediction: Arkansas State's brand-new roster faces Toledo's veteran center Austin Parks

The Red Wolves bring back almost none of last season's minutes, so tonight's opener in Jonesboro tests whether Ryan Pannone's system can outrun the missing continuity.

Quick take
  • Expect a fast, high-scoring opener where Arkansas State's new transfers chase Toledo shooters and attack a Rockets front line that struggled on the glass last season.
  • Austin Parks inside against Arkansas State's rebuilt frontcourt of Jordan Pyke and shot-blocker Amadou Doumbia.
  • Arkansas State -3.5 hasn't moved, but the total climbed from 160.5 to 162.5; the Red Wolves played at the 15th-fastest pace last season.

Arkansas State starts from zero

Arkansas State was picked first in the Sun Belt preseason poll, and almost nobody who earned that reputation is still in Jonesboro. The Red Wolves return 5.5% of last season's minutes, which makes last season's 20-12 team a résumé for the program, not for this roster. The lone returner with real minutes is guard Royal Blue Smith, who played 13.1 minutes a game.

Ryan Pannone, in his second season, rebuilt through the portal. Jordan Pyke, a 6-7 forward, averaged 12.6 points at Incarnate Word and hit 40.4% of his threes. Layne Taylor ran the show at Murray State with an offensive rating of 124.1 (points produced per 100 possessions). He and Tameron Ferguson are expected to be the main ball handlers.

Pannone kept expectations measured, saying the team's readiness depends on the day. The group has had a couple of scrimmages and an exhibition, which is not much time for a roster this new to learn each other's habits.

Toledo keeps its anchor

Toledo is no model of stability either. It returns 36% of last season's minutes after losing its two lead guards: Leroy Blyden Jr., who averaged 16.4 points and is now at Kansas, and Sonny Wilson, now at South Florida. Still, the Rockets keep their spine. Parks, the 6-10 center and a Preseason All-MAC Second Team pick, made 60.9% of his shots last season and blocked 1.2 a game.

The new backcourt is the question. Sean Jones, the Marquette transfer and the other All-MAC Second Team selection, is expected to run the point and push the pace, though he played only 8 games last season. Angel Montas Jr. brings a scorer's profile from UMass Lowell, where he averaged 15.8 points. Rich Barron, a Big East transfer, adds another wing option.

The preseason results were mixed: an 88-78 exhibition win over Findlay, then a 79-66 loss to Northern Illinois. Toledo was picked second in the MAC and has won all four previous meetings with the Red Wolves.

The glass could tilt it

If anything about Arkansas State carries over from last season, it is the coach's style, not the players. Pannone's team grabbed 38.0% of its own misses, ninth in Division I. Toledo ranked 301st in defensive rebounding last season, a weakness that Parks's return may only partly fix.

Toledo's interior defense was a bigger problem. Opponents made 55.7% of their twos, which ranked 334th. If Pyke and Doumbia, who averaged 4.0 rebounds in 14 minutes a game at North Carolina A&T, can get to the rim and the offensive glass, the Red Wolves' new offense won't need to be sharp to score.

Toledo's counter is discipline. Last season the Rockets kept opponents off the line better than almost anyone, ranking 14th in opponent free throw rate (free throws attempted per shot), while Arkansas State turned the ball over at the 335th-ranked rate. Different players, but a brand-new backcourt playing its first real game is exactly where a sloppy night comes from.

What the market is pricing

Arkansas State is a 3.5-point home favorite, a line that has held since our feed first saw it. The total has risen from 160.5 to 162.5, which points to a fast game. Last season both teams played quickly: Arkansas State ranked 15th in pace and Toledo 84th.

The spread leans on home court and preseason reputation more than on last season's ratings. In last season's final adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents), Toledo ranked 130th and Arkansas State 157th. With so little returning in Jonesboro, those numbers describe teams that no longer exist, and the line reflects what the market expects from the newcomers.

Tip is set for 8 p.m. ET at First National Bank Arena on ESPN+, the opening game of the MAC-SBC Challenge.
