The Citadel Bulldogs vs Loyola (Chi) Ramblers prediction: Loyola's transfer haul takes aim at The Citadel's soft interior

Two teams that return about a seventh of last season's minutes open tonight in Chicago, and Loyola's bigger, deeper rebuild is priced as a two-touchdown favorite.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 2, 6:02 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Loyola's bigger frontcourt should score inside against a Citadel defense that ranked near the bottom of Division I guarding twos last season.
  • Dayan Nessah against Ramel Bethea: Loyola's top transfer scorer against The Citadel's new shot-blocker.
  • Loyola is -15 with a 143 total, down slightly from -15.25 and 143.25; Loyola ranked 298th in pace last season and The Citadel 310th.

Two rosters starting from scratch

Season openers rarely come with less useful history than this one. Loyola Chicago returns 14.6% of last season's minutes, and The Citadel returns 13.8%. Both teams lost far more than they kept, so last season's records and ratings describe programs that mostly no longer exist.

Loyola's rebuild is the louder one. Drew Valentine added 13 newcomers after a 9-24 season. Dayan Nessah, the headliner from Cleveland State, averaged 15.5 points there last season. He scored 14 in 24 minutes in the Oct. 18 exhibition loss to DePaul while carrying a shoulder designation, and it hasn't been said whether that affects him tonight. Boston College transfer Donald Hand Jr. is the bigger question. He played six minutes and didn't score in that exhibition while dealing with a knee issue, and there has been no newer word on him. Guillaume Grotzinger, a transfer from France's Élite 2, is expected to take heavy minutes at point guard. Malick Diallo, a transfer coming back from a knee injury, has been described as fully cleared for basketball activities.

The Citadel lost its top scorer, Braxton Williams, who averaged 14.6 points last season, along with starting forward Sola Adebisi. Ed Conroy has six returners and 11 newcomers, including senior Marcus Banks after three seasons at Shepherd. Conroy calls this his most talented roster since returning and says it can go nine or 10 deep. No injuries have been reported for the Bulldogs.

Size against a soft middle

The clearest matchup edge points to the paint. Last season The Citadel let opponents shoot 58.2% on two-pointers, 362nd of 365 teams. Most of that roster is gone. Still, Conroy's answer was to get taller and more physical, which suggests he knows where the damage came from.

Loyola has the size to test that. Its minutes-weighted average height is 78.8 inches against The Citadel's 77.2, and the Ramblers' backcourt has been called notably big. Nessah shot 55.3% from the field at Cleveland State. James Madison transfer Eddie Ricks III posted a 123.8 offensive rating, a measure of points produced per 100 possessions used.

The Citadel's counter is Ramel Bethea, who blocked 1.3 shots a game in limited minutes at Green Bay. How long he stays on the floor without fouling may decide whether the Bulldogs keep this within reach.

Threes, tempo and the total

Both programs lived behind the arc last season. The Citadel ranked 17th nationally in 3-point attempt rate, the share of shots taken from deep, and Loyola ranked 28th. Neither shot it well, and neither defended it: Loyola allowed 36.8% from three (350th) and The Citadel allowed 36.5% (342nd).

Both teams also played slowly. Loyola ranked 298th in pace and The Citadel 310th, which keeps the number of possessions down. A 143 total asks two rebuilt offenses to find their rhythm on opening night. If the new guards play at last season's tempo and miss threes the way their predecessors did, scoring could lag behind that number.

The turnover question for Loyola

Loyola's worst habit last season was giving the ball away. Its turnover rate, turnovers per 100 possessions, was 19.9%, 342nd nationally, and its defense forced almost none, ranking 360th. The Citadel took better care of the ball, ranking 108th in turnover rate.

A new point guard and a new rotation may fix that or keep it going. For an underdog getting 15 points, extra possessions are the most realistic way to stay close, so Loyola's early ball security is worth watching.

Where the market sits

Loyola opened at -15.25 in our feed and sits at -15 across eight books, a small move toward The Citadel. The total slipped from 143.25 to 143. The gap in last season's final adjusted ratings supports a wide spread: Loyola finished 274th in adjusted net efficiency, The Citadel 349th. With so few players back, those ratings are mostly a sketch of each program's floor. The Citadel was picked 10th of 11 in the SoCon preseason poll. Tip is at 8 p.m. ET.
