Texas Southern Tigers vs Grand Canyon Antelopes prediction: Texas Southern's rebuilt roster opens against a reloaded Grand Canyon
Corey Lowery's first night in charge comes in Phoenix, where a Grand Canyon team stacked with returning scorers and veteran transfers is a four-touchdown favorite.
| Spread | Grand Canyon -28.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 141 |
- Grand Canyon's returning scorers and transfers should overwhelm a Texas Southern roster that returns 21.2% of last season's minutes under a first-year coach.
- Watch Texas Southern's fouling: it ranked 348th in opponent free throw rate last season, and Grand Canyon shot 75.3% at the line.
- Grand Canyon is favored by 28.5; the total has fallen from 148.5 to 143.0 since our feed first saw the game.
A roster built from scratch
Corey Lowery's first game at Texas Southern comes tonight in Phoenix. He inherits almost nothing. The Tigers bring back 21.2% of last season's minutes and just 12.8% of its points, so last season's numbers say little about this group.
The scoring core is gone. Troy Hupstead, who averaged 14.6 points last season, isn't on the roster, and neither are guards Bryce Roberts and Zaire Hayes. That 2025-26 team finished 328th in adjusted net efficiency, a measure of points scored minus points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents. The new group has to be judged on players, not that history.
Lowery arrives with a 266-73 record as a college head coach. He was hired in August after Johnny Jones left for an assistant's job at LSU, and the search drew pushback from students, staff, players and alumni. The backcourt leans on newcomers: Karris Bilal from Louisiana, Jason Kimbrough Jr. from Bowling Green and Sayed Sayed from Gillette College. We found no injury news for Texas Southern, and the roster is still unsettled. One online roster still lists Cameron Patterson, who entered the transfer portal in March.
Grand Canyon reloads around Henley
The Antelopes, now in the Mountain West, kept the players who mattered most. Jaden Henley averaged 17.7 points last season and won an extra year of eligibility through court rulings after a summer with the Detroit Pistons' Summer League team. Makaih Williams, who scored 14.0 a game, changed his mind about entering the portal and returns for his senior season.
Bryce Drew then added experience. Blake Barkley posted a 127.1 offensive rating at East Tennessee State last season, and Micah Tucker made 81.3% of his free throws at Georgia State. Efe Demirel, who shot 63.0% from the field last season, anchors the middle after big man Dennis Evans left.
The depth isn't complete yet. As of Oct. 26, guards Tre Holloman and Dan Skillings Jr. were ineligible with court cases pending. Grand Canyon's Oct. 30 injury report listed no injuries, and the team picked up two votes in the AP preseason poll.
Trouble at the free throw line
Last season Texas Southern sent opponents to the line constantly. Its opponent free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) was 43.6%, which ranked 348th in Division I.
That plays straight into how Grand Canyon scores. The Antelopes drew free throws at a 39.5% rate last season and made 75.3% of them. With so much of Texas Southern's roster new, the fouling habit may not carry over. If it does, a game that gets away early can keep stretching through the bonus.
Possessions, pace and a falling total
Grand Canyon built its 20-12 season last year on defense. Its adjusted defensive efficiency of 98.7 points allowed per 100 possessions ranked 28th nationally, and it ended opponents' trips by grabbing 74.7% of their misses, 16th in the country.
Texas Southern struggled with the ball last season. Its turnover rate of 19.0 per 100 possessions ranked 313th. A new backcourt facing a set defense in its first game is unlikely to fix that overnight.
The tempo signals point opposite ways. Texas Southern played at 70.2 possessions per 40 minutes last season, while Grand Canyon played at 66.4. The total has dropped, which fits a slower game. The spread has held at 28.5 since our feed first logged it, but the total has dropped from 148.5 to 143.0.
