Texas A&M-CC Islanders vs Texas State Bobcats prediction: Texas State brings its core into the Pac-12; Corpus Christi starts over
The Bobcats open their new league life with most of a 19-win team intact, against an Islanders roster that returns almost none of last season's minutes.
| Spread | Texas State -10.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 142.5 |
- Texas State's returning core and home floor should control early, while A&M-Corpus Christi's 12 newcomers try to find each other in a season opener.
- Watch DJ Hall inside against an Islanders frontcourt led by Wagner transfer Binael Basil, with fouls and free throws shaping the margin.
- Texas State is favored by 10.5, up from 9 at first look; the Islanders return just 15.1% of last season's minutes.
Continuity against a clean slate
Texas State plays its first game as a Pac-12 member tonight with most of a winning team still in the locker room. The Bobcats return 54.2% of last season's minutes, led by forward DJ Hall, who averaged 15.6 points. Mark Drone and Kaden Gumbs are back in the backcourt, and Terrence Johnson returns after six seasons as head coach.
A&M-Corpus Christi is closer to a new program. Only 15.1% of last season's minutes come back, and the Islanders added 12 newcomers. Top scorer Nick Shogbonyo and starting forward Sheldon Williams are both gone.
That matters most on defense. Last season's Islanders allowed 98.8 points per 100 possessions, 18th nationally, but the players who built that number have largely moved on. Jim Shaw's staff still earned enough trust to be picked third in the Southland, while Texas State was picked seventh in its new league.
A three-shy offense adds shooters
The Bobcats barely shot from deep last season. Only 24.8% of their field goal attempts were threes, 364th of 365 teams. Hall did his work inside, and the offense followed him.
The transfer class could change that profile. Paul Djobet, named to the Pac-12 preseason impact list alongside Hall, hit 41.5% from three at Omaha. KJ Younger was a high-volume shooter at UNC Greensboro. If Texas State starts spacing the floor tonight, a rebuilt Islanders defense will have to guard a version of this team that didn't exist last season.
The whistle could decide the margin
Last season's Islanders fouled constantly. Their opponent free throw rate (free throws attempted per field goal attempt) was 45.5%, 356th nationally. They also shot poorly at the line, making 67.7% of their free throws to rank 332nd.
Texas State was the opposite at the stripe, making 75.9% of its free throws for a rank of 52nd. New faces change some of this. Basil was efficient around the basket at Wagner but struggled at the line. Returner Daniel Michelini-Jackson is the safest hand on the roster. If the Islanders' new pieces bring the same habit of fouling, the Bobcats should have a steady source of points in the second half.
Where the Islanders find offense
Sebastian Robinson is the likeliest focal point. He averaged 14.8 points at NJIT with a 30.6% usage rate, meaning he finished nearly a third of his team's possessions while on the floor. He was not a perimeter threat there, so expect him to attack the paint.
Ball security is the worry. Texas State posted a steal rate of 12.3% last season, 31st nationally, and Gumbs was its top thief. A backcourt of transfers playing its first game together is exactly the kind of group those hands punish.
What the line says
Texas State opened at -9.0 in the first line we tracked and now sits at -10.5, so the money has moved toward the more experienced team. The total has slipped from 144.5 to 142.5. Both teams played at a middling tempo last season, with Texas State at 67.7 possessions per 40 minutes.
The Bobcats have won the last four meetings. No injury or eligibility news has surfaced for either team.
- Whether Texas State lets Djobet and Younger fire from deep
- Islanders foul trouble in the frontcourt
- Robinson's turnovers against Gumbs
