Quick take
  • Murray State's offense and continuity should set the terms. Tennessee State needs its new transfers to click immediately on a neutral floor.
  • Roman Domon against Tennessee State's new backcourt: the Racers' leading returner faces guards who have never played together.
  • Murray State is -10.5, up from -8.5 when our feed first saw it; Tennessee State returns just 7.3% of last season's minutes.

A champion starting over

Tennessee State won the OVC tournament last March and reached its first NCAA Tournament since 1994. Then the roster emptied. The Tigers return 7.3% of last season's minutes, and the players who carried them are gone: Aaron Nkrumah averaged 17.6 points, Travis Harper II added 17.2, and Jalen Pitre left for Buffalo.

Nolan Smith, in his second season and recently extended through 2031, rebuilt through the portal. Ty-Laur Johnson is the likely focal point after averaging 14.6 points at San Diego last season. Aaron Bradshaw brings size and efficiency, scoring 8.6 points a game at Memphis on a 56.3% effective field goal percentage (a shooting measure that counts threes 1.5 times). Arterio Morris can score but shot 25% from three at Bethune-Cookman.

That turnover makes last season's 23-10 team a weak guide. Its defense ranked 70th nationally in efficiency, but almost none of the players who built that number are back.

Murray State keeps its engine

The Racers have their own churn, but they return 27.6% of last season's minutes, and the most important piece stayed. Roman Domon, the reigning MVC Freshman and Sixth Man of the Year, averaged 14.1 points last season with an offensive rating of 124.7.

He anchored an offense that scored 123.3 points per 100 possessions, 12th in the country. Ryan Miller lost Javon Jackson and center Fred King, who left for Creighton, then added Christian Jones from George Washington, where he shot 36.4% from three, plus Shon Tupuola, Brigham Rogers and Kaden Magwood. The Racers already won an exhibition at Wichita State, 93-87. Murray State was picked first in the MVC for the first time, and Miller has an extension through 2031.

The defense that has to improve

Murray State's problem last season sat at the other end. The Racers allowed 119.4 points per 100 possessions, 355th of 365. The shape was unusual: opponents attempted the fewest threes of any defense in the country (365th in opponent 3-point attempt rate) and still hit 36.2% of the ones they took.

That suggests opponents could score inside or off the dribble without needing the arc. King's rim protection is gone, so Tupuola, who blocked 1.2 shots a game at Valparaiso, matters early. Last season's Tennessee State team rarely shot threes, ranking 347th in attempt rate, though a new roster may play differently.

Tempo is the other clash. The Tigers played at the 24th-fastest pace last season, while Murray State sat 201st. A faster Tennessee State team chasing a double-digit deficit would push possessions up.

Where the number sits

Ten books have Murray State favored by 10.5, two points higher than the -8.5 our feed first recorded. The total has climbed too, from 161.5 to 165, consistent with an elite offense and a suspect defense from last season.

History favors the Racers. They lead the old OVC series 58-17 and won the last eight meetings, from 2017 to 2022. The 11:30 a.m. ET tip at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, part of the Field of 68 Opening Day Marathon, puts both teams on a neutral floor far from home. No injury or eligibility news has surfaced for either side, and neither has announced a starting lineup.

  • Whether Domon gets clean looks against an unfamiliar defense
  • Johnson's shot volume and decision-making in his first game with new teammates
  • How often Tennessee State attacks the paint without King there to protect it
