A Pirates roster built from scratch
Michael Schwartz opened practice on Sept. 22 with 12 of 15 players new to the program. He also added three new assistants, including associate head coach Nick Matson. Only Jayshayne Woodard, Eli DeLaurier and Daithi Quinn return. Newcomers such as Cian Medley and Kaseem Watson will have to carry much of the load.
That turnover makes last season's numbers a weak guide for East Carolina. The Pirates went 11-20 and made 28.8% of their threes, 361st nationally. Their effective field goal percentage, which counts threes as 1.5 times a two, ranked 353rd. Whoever replaced that production can hardly shoot worse, but nobody outside the program has seen them play together yet.
Upstate's defence carried last season
South Carolina Upstate went 13-19 last season and won with defence. It allowed 104.2 points per 100 possessions, 81st nationally. Opponents made 48.6% of their twos against the Spartans, 65th. Their block rate of 12.3% of opponent two-point tries ranked 43rd.
The schedule-adjusted view is less kind. Once opponents are accounted for, Upstate's defence fell to 211th and its offence sat at 327th. The Big South's preseason poll, released today, picked the Spartans eighth of nine. If they win in Greenville, the interior defence will be the reason. East Carolina's new roster has to score in the paint, because last season's version made just 47.9% of its twos, 333rd nationally.
Extra possessions and the free-throw line
East Carolina's one clear strength last season was effort plays. The Pirates grabbed 33.7% of their own misses, 91st nationally. Upstate's defensive rebounding ranked 205th, so second chances could decide a low-scoring night.
The Pirates also drew fouls. Their free throw rate, free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt, was 39.3%, 69th in the country. Upstate could struggle to answer at the line in a tight finish: the Spartans made 68.5% of their free throws, 312th. With this many new faces, nobody can be sure these traits carried over. They still give the clearest guide to how each side has gotten its points.
Tempo and a recent upset
Neither team plays at an extreme pace. Upstate ran 69.7 possessions per 40 minutes last season, a little quicker than East Carolina's 68.7. Expect a normal number of trips rather than a track meet.
The last meeting should keep the home side honest. Upstate won 83-81 at East Carolina in November 2023. East Carolina opens at home for the sixth straight year. This time it starts a season with a roster its own fans barely know.
