Siena Saints vs Bryant Bulldogs prediction: Nevada Smith's rebuilt Siena opens at Bryant against Jamion Christian

Both rosters were gutted over the summer, and the market has decided Siena's rebuild deserves more trust than Bryant's, moving the line across zero before tip.

Quick take
  • Expect an untidy opener between two mostly new rosters, with turnovers and cold shooting likely shaping it more than any system.
  • Bryant's Keegan Harvey, a preseason all-league pick, against a Siena frontcourt that lost its best interior scorers to Syracuse.
  • Bryant was first seen as a 2.5-point home favorite and Siena is now favored by 3; the total climbed from 147.5 to 150.5.

A coach against his old program

Tonight's opener at Chace Athletic Center has a built-in plot. Jamion Christian, Bryant's coach for a second season, used to run Siena, and he faces the Saints in an opener for the second straight year. Across the bench, Nevada Smith makes his debut after being named Siena's coach on April 1.

Siena has had Bryant's number lately. The Saints won 82-66 at home last November and 90-88 in Smithfield the year before. Neither result says much about tonight, though, because almost none of the players from those games will be on the floor.

Almost nobody is back

Siena returns 21.6% of last season's minutes, Bryant 26.7%. That makes last season's records (Siena 23-12, Bryant 9-22) a weak guide. The 2025-26 numbers describe programs, not these teams.

Siena's losses run deepest. Gavin Doty scored 18.0 points a game and Francis Folefac 11.3, and both are now at Syracuse. Brendan Coyle is the only returning starter. He missed the Syracuse exhibition with an upper-body injury but is expected to play. Smith filled the gaps with VMI transfer Tan Yildizoglu, who averaged 4.6 assists last season. He also added Pace Prosser, a Division II All-American who led Gannon to a national title, and Andrés Amón, a 7-1 center from Madrid. Reid Ducharme, who missed all of last season with a shoulder injury that needed surgery, was described as healthy in July.

Bryant brought in 11 new players. The anchor is Harvey, who shot 40% from three and posted a 60.6 effective field goal percentage last season (a measure where threes count 1.5 times). New Haven transfer Andre Pasha scored 10.7 points a game there. A suspension has been noted in connection with incoming Duane Thompson's commitment, so his availability is unconfirmed.

Threes that may not fall

Bryant lived behind the arc last season. Its 47.8% three-point attempt rate ranked 27th nationally, the share of shots taken from deep. The problem was making them: the Bulldogs shot 30.4%, 340th of 365. Ty Tabales, their top returning guard, went 26.4% on 178 attempts.

Siena's early evidence isn't better. The Saints went 6-for-31 from three in an 81-76 exhibition loss to Syracuse on Oct. 18, and Coyle shot 30% from deep last season. If neither side finds a stroke, the game moves to the paint and the free-throw line. Siena shot 77.1% at the line last season, 27th nationally, but most of those shooters are gone.

Bryant has to hold onto it

Ball security sank Bryant last season. The Bulldogs turned it over on 20.1% of possessions, 348th in the country, and their defense forced turnovers at a rate that ranked 323rd. That combination cost them shots on both ends.

Christian has a largely new backcourt to fix it, with Georgia Tech transfer Eric Chatfield Jr. and a group of true freshmen in the mix. A season-opening game with new guards on both sides favors whichever team protects the ball, and Bryant's recent history leaves it more to prove there.

Where the line has gone

The first line in our feed had Bryant favored by 2.5 at home. It has since flipped to Siena -3, with seven books quoting. That swing says the market rates Smith's mix of transfers and returnees above Bryant's rebuild. Preseason polls agree: Siena was picked third in its league, Bryant fifth of nine in the America East.

The total rose from 147.5 to 150.5, which cuts against last season's styles. Siena played at the 363rd-fastest pace of 365 teams, measured in possessions per 40 minutes, and Bryant ranked 319th. A higher total implies the market expects new coaches and new rosters to play faster, or looser, than those slow programs did. With both rosters this new, nobody knows yet how fast either one wants to play.
