San Francisco State vs UC Santa Barbara prediction: UC Santa Barbara's rebuilt roster gets its first home look against SF State
With three top players gone and six transfers in, UC Santa Barbara's home opener is less about the opponent than about what the new Gauchos look like.
- UC Santa Barbara should control a visitor from outside Division I at the Thunderdome, with the real interest in how a reshaped rotation fits together.
- The new Gauchos' ball security. Last season's turnover rate ranked 307th of 365, the weakest part of an efficient offense.
A new cast in Santa Barbara
Joe Pasternack enters his 10th season with a roster that looks very different from the one that went 18-14 last season. Jason Fontenet II, Colin Smith and Zion Sensley, three of the Gauchos' top players, left through the transfer portal.
In their place come transfers Declan Duru Jr. (Texas), Antonio Chol (New Mexico), RJ Smith (DePaul), Eric Dibami (FIU), Viljami Vartiainen (Weber State) and Isaac Shingange (City College of SF), plus freshmen Marco John Wuol and Jordan Charles. That much change makes last season's team numbers a loose guide, so treat everything below as a sketch of the program's habits rather than a scouting report on this roster.
The shooting identity to replace
Last season's Gauchos could score. Their effective field goal percentage, which counts threes as 1.5 makes, was 54.9%, 53rd in Division I, and they hit 37.3% from deep, 27th nationally. They also made 76.3% at the line.
The flaw was giveaways: a turnover rate of 18.8 per 100 possessions ranked 307th. Whether the new ball handlers clean that up is worth watching even against a lower-division opponent.
Where the defense gave ground
UCSB finished last season 9th in defensive rebound percentage, closing out possessions as well as almost anyone. The rest of the defense was softer. Opponents got to the line often (free throw rate allowed ranked 317th), and the Gauchos rarely blocked shots, ranking 325th in block rate. Chol and Duru Jr. arriving from New Mexico and Texas give the staff new pieces to work with.
The visitor from across the state
San Francisco State plays outside Division I, and there's no data on the Gators to measure. Their roster leans on junior college and Sonoma State transfers, including Markees Williams and Alex Naber. Their last game on record was a season-ending loss to Stanislaus State in February, and their next scheduled test is an upcoming exhibition at San Francisco on Oct. 26, a week before this trip south.
Numbers that matter
| UCSB 3-point % (last season) | 37.3% | Ranked 27th nationally, the core of last season's offense that a remade roster must replace. |
|---|---|---|
| UCSB turnover rate (last season) | 18.8 | Ranked 307th of 365, the weak spot in an otherwise efficient attack. |
| UCSB defensive rebound % (last season) | 75.3% | Ranked 9th, the defense's best trait. |
| UCSB opponent free throw rate (last season) | 40.6% | Ranked 317th, a sign the Gauchos fouled too often. |
