Rivier vs UMass Lowell prediction: UMass Lowell opens against Rivier with questions after a seventh-place pick

A Division III visitor UMass Lowell has beaten every time gives the River Hawks a first look at a new season.

Quick take
  • UMass Lowell should control this from the start; last season's opener against Rivier finished 107-55.
  • Watch UMass Lowell's offensive glass: last season it ranked 61st nationally in offensive rebound rate.
  • No spread or total is posted; last season's 52-point margin in this matchup is the only reference point.

A familiar opening act

UMass Lowell opens its season Monday, Nov. 2, at 7 PM ET in Lowell against a Rivier program it has never lost to. The River Hawks beat Rivier 107-55 in last season's opener. Austin Green, then a senior, posted 21 points and 13 rebounds that night.

The series dates to Nov. 9, 2021. The 2024 meeting was an exhibition that did not count toward Rivier's record. Neither school has said whether this year's game counts.

What Lowell needs to show

The stakes sit with the hosts. America East coaches picked UMass Lowell seventh in the preseason poll, and Vermont was picked first. That pick follows a 15-18 season that ended with a 91-69 loss at UMBC in the America East semifinals.

Last season's numbers point to where the work is. Lowell made just 66.7% of its free throws, 347th of 365 Division I teams. It also ranked 340th in 3-point attempt rate, the share of shots taken from deep, so it was one of the least three-heavy teams in the country. Its strength was second chances: an offensive rebound rate of 34.8%, meaning it grabbed that share of its own misses, ranked 61st. Against a Division III frontcourt, that edge should show up.

Those figures describe last season's team. Pat Duquette's roster lists freshmen including Jasiah Cannady and Max Ellis, so this opener is a first look at new pieces, not a verdict on them.

Rivier under Glynn

Tom Glynn is in his fourth season at Rivier. In his first year he led the largest turnaround in Division III, going 15-12 with 13 more wins than the season before. We have no statistical profile for Rivier and no news on its roster, so treat the visitors as unknown beyond the gap in classification and last year's scoreline.
