Rhode Island College vs UAlbany prediction: UAlbany opens a rebuilt roster against Rhode Island College
The Nov. 2 opener against a non-Division I visitor is less about the result than about who Dwayne Killings puts on the floor after a turnover-heavy offseason.
- Expect UAlbany to control a home game against a non-Division I visitor while Killings sorts out rotations for a largely new roster.
- Watch who runs the backcourt: the Danes added five transfers and six freshmen around Albany native Zach Matulu.
- No spread or total has been posted. UAlbany finished 11-21 last season, a weak guide given the roster churn.
A new cast in Albany
Dwayne Killings enters his sixth season with a rebuilt group. As of mid-July, the Great Danes had brought in six freshmen and five transfers, with four players back from last year's squad, led by Albany native Zach Matulu. The official roster lists transfers Miles Rose (St. Bonaventure), Benjamin Michaels (Vermont), Pedro Santos (UT Martin), Kean Webb (Portland State) and Abdoulaye Fall (Indian Hills CC).
That churn matters more than anything from last year. Injuries in 2025-26 often left Killings with only seven or eight available players. The last update on Matulu, from January, concerned plantar fasciitis, and nothing newer has surfaced. Okechukwu Okeke's status for this season is unsettled: one roster lists him as a senior forward and the official roster does not show him.
What last season's numbers say
Read these as background, not a forecast. UAlbany went 11-21 and ended its season with a 76-81 loss at UMass Lowell in the America East quarterfinals.
By adjusted efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents), last season's defence ranked 333rd of 365. The offence had some clear flaws. Its free throw rate, free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt, ranked 364th, and the Danes made just 66.1% of their free throws. Rim protection was a strength, with a block rate that ranked 59th. How much of that profile carries over depends on players who may not be back.
Preseason expectations are muddled too. UAlbany was picked sixth of nine in the America East coaches' poll, though a conflicting preseason projection has them tied for second.
Logistics and the visitor
Little is known about Rhode Island College beyond its name, and the Anchormen have no Division I data to measure. UAlbany's announced schedule has this Nov. 2 opener at Broadview Center leading into the inaugural America East–Metro Basketball Challenge. Rhode Island College's own published schedule does not show this game and lists a Nov. 11 home date against Nichols College. Confirm the date and tip time, which is still to be announced, before the game.
Key players
- Amir Lindsey (UAlbany): He averaged 17.9 points and 4.9 assists last season, though no report this offseason has confirmed his return.
- Okechukwu Okeke (UAlbany): He shot 69.1% from the field with 2.0 blocks per game last season, but his place on this season's roster hasn't been confirmed.
Numbers that matter
| Last season's record | 11-21 | The baseline for a roster that has since added 11 newcomers. |
|---|---|---|
| Free throw rate rank, last season | 364th | UAlbany almost never got to the line, a habit the new pieces may or may not change. |
| Adj. defensive efficiency rank, last season | 333rd | The defence was the bigger problem by opponent-adjusted measures. |
| Block rate rank, last season | 59th | Rim protection was a strength, though the key shot-blocker's status is unclear. |
