Quinnipiac Bobcats vs Michigan St Spartans prediction: Michigan State must rebuild its rebounding wall against an overhauled Quinnipiac
The Spartans open with their two starting bigs gone and the nation's sixth-ranked hype, while Quinnipiac arrives with a lineup few have seen together.
| Spread | Michigan State -30.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 153.25 |
- Michigan State's continuity around Jeremy Fears Jr. should overwhelm a Quinnipiac roster with eight newcomers. The margin is the real question.
- Watch the Spartans' new frontcourt on the glass. They ranked 2nd in defensive rebound rate last season, and both starting bigs are gone.
- Michigan State is -29.5 with a total of 150, both unchanged since Nov. 1. The Spartans played at a slower-than-average pace last season, 247th nationally at 66.4 possessions per 40 minutes.
The glass without Kohler and Cooper
Michigan State's identity last season lived on the boards. The Spartans grabbed 37.8% of their own misses, 12th in the country, and cleaned up 77.6% of opponents' misses, 2nd in Division I. That is a team that rarely gave up second chances and kept creating its own.
The two men who anchored that work are gone. Jaxon Kohler averaged 8.9 rebounds last season and is now at BYU, and Carson Cooper has also moved on. Charlotte transfer Anton Bonke, who pulled down 8.3 rebounds a game last season, was presumed to be the starting center, but he logged only nine combined minutes across the two fall exhibitions. Jesse McCulloch filled the gap instead, scoring 20 points in the Incarnate Word exhibition, and one projection for tonight has him starting at center.
Cam Ward, who missed that Incarnate Word game with an ankle sprain, was cleared to return for the UConn exhibition and projects at power forward. Quinnipiac rebounded only 68.7% of opponents' misses last season, 253rd nationally, though that was a different roster. Tonight is a first look at whether Tom Izzo's rebuilt front line can keep the glass as Michigan State's edge.
Fears runs the whole show
The Spartans enter Izzo's 32nd season ranked No. 6 in both preseason polls, and the reason starts at point guard. Jeremy Fears Jr., the Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year, averaged 9.3 assists last season with an offensive rating of 131 (points produced per 100 possessions used). Michigan State assisted on more of its baskets than all but two teams, ranking 3rd in assist rate.
He opened the fall with a double-double in the 89-59 exhibition win over Incarnate Word. The question is who finishes his passes. Kur Teng made 38.1% of his threes last season, and Izzo said on Oct. 29 that a healthy Teng could be the team's best shooter, a remark that leaves his health an open question. The backcourt next to Fears is unsettled too: one projection starts Jordan Scott at shooting guard, while another has freshman Jasiah Jervis and Scott possibly both starting.
Quinnipiac starts almost from scratch
Tom Pecora's program has won back-to-back MAAC regular-season titles, and he won consecutive conference Coach of the Year awards for it. Little of that team remains. Quinnipiac lost four starters to transfers, brought in eight newcomers and returns just 25.8% of last season's minutes. Last season's team numbers are a weak guide to this group.
The constants matter. Keith McKnight, who averaged 11.0 points off the bench last season, stayed, and guard Tai Turnage is back. The biggest boost came Oct. 26, when guard Asim Jones was approved for another year of eligibility. He averaged 12.5 points, led the team with 126 assists and made 46.4% of his threes last season.
The rest is guesswork for now. One preview lists Division II transfers Lukas Sekasi and Tayeshawn Cunningham-Pemberton as a possible starting backcourt; Cunningham-Pemberton averaged 14 points at Assumption. Cleveland State transfer Holden Pierre-Louis adds some rim protection at forward.
Reading a 29.5-point line
The market has Michigan State favored by 29.5 at home with a total of 150, and neither number has moved since our feed first recorded the game Nov. 1. The moneyline on Quinnipiac sits at +6000.
Tempo shapes how a margin that wide gets built. Last season Michigan State played at 66.4 possessions per 40 minutes, 247th nationally, while Quinnipiac ran at 111th. A slower game means fewer possessions for a gap to grow, which puts the burden on Spartan efficiency rather than volume. A first-time matchup with no shared history, an untested Quinnipiac lineup and a Michigan State rotation still sorting itself out make tonight's opener a game where the second half, and how long Izzo keeps his starters in, could decide the cover.
