Purdue Boilermakers vs Gonzaga Bulldogs prediction: Gonzaga's courtroom-built roster opens against a Purdue missing Braden Smith
Both programs reloaded, but Purdue's holdovers know the system while Gonzaga is still finding out who is eligible to play.
| Spread | Gonzaga -5.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 153.5 |
- Expect Gonzaga to pound the paint through Huff and Diop while Purdue's new-look guards try to slow the game down.
- Omer Mayer, Purdue's new starting point guard, against a Gonzaga defense that turned opponents over constantly last season.
- Gonzaga is favored by 5.25, down from 5.5 when our feed first saw it. Gonzaga returns just 13.7% of last season's minutes.
A lineup assembled by judges
Purdue owns a 5-0 all-time series lead over Gonzaga, the last win coming in the 2024 Sweet 16. Tonight's opener at T-Mobile Arena pits two very different rebuilds against each other, and Gonzaga's started in courtrooms.
The Bulldogs return just 13.7% of last season's minutes, and Graham Ike's 19.9 points a game are gone. Their eligibility fights shaped who plays tonight. A California judge's injunction on Oct. 20 kept Xaivian Lee eligible, though the NCAA is expected to appeal. Javon Bennett was reinstated by the Ohio Supreme Court in mid-to-late October. Izan Almansa was cleared the day before the Arkansas exhibition and scored 14 in it.
Chauncey Wiggins remains ineligible after the Georgia Court of Appeals stayed his injunction, and a Texas judge was still reviewing a restraining order in his case as of Monday. That matters because Gonzaga's preseason KenPom ranking of No. 14 assumed all four cases would be cleared. The expected starting five is Lee, Isiah Harwell, Davis Fogle, Braden Huff and Massamba Diop.
Purdue after the Smith era
Purdue returns more, but not much of what made it go. Braden Smith (8.8 assists a game last season), Fletcher Loyer, Oscar Cluff and Trey Kaufman-Renn, now at Kansas, are all gone. Last season's adjusted offense ranked 2nd nationally, and with only 41.2% of the minutes back, that number is a weak guide to this team.
The starters are C.J. Cox, Princeton transfer Caden Pierce, Omer Mayer, Gicarri Harris and center Daniel Jacobsen. Cox is the steadiest piece, a 37.3% three-point shooter last season. Mayer now runs the point after a bench role in which he carried a 22.5% usage rate but only a 103.9 offensive rating (points produced per 100 possessions).
That is the pressure point. Gonzaga forced turnovers on 20.1% of opponent possessions last season, 39th in the country, and Smith is no longer there to absorb it. Painter has said he thought nine players deserved to start, and he called freshman Webber a "flamethrower," so depth may cushion a slow night from the starters.
Gonzaga lives inside
Mark Few's teams have rarely needed the three. Last season Gonzaga took threes on just 30.8% of its shots, 344th nationally, and its new guards won't change that. Lee shot 28.9% from deep at Florida, and Harwell shot 27.1% at Houston.
So the offense runs through Huff and Diop. Huff averaged 17.8 points before a knee injury ended his season after Jan. 8, and he was described as healthy in late September and is expected to start. Diop blocked 2.1 shots a game at Arizona State, which also gives Gonzaga a rim protector against Jacobsen and Purdue's bigs. Painter's backups inside, Enzo Shahrvin and Raleigh Burgess, will need to hold up against that frontcourt.
Tempo and the market
The pace clash is real, with the caveat that both rosters changed. Purdue played at 64.3 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 330th nationally, while Gonzaga ran at 69.8, 78th. If Purdue's guards can keep this in the half court, a lower-possession game favors the underdog.
The market has drifted that way. Gonzaga opened at -5.5 in our feed and sits at -5.25 across 10 books, with the total down from 155.5 to 154.25. With Wiggins out and Lee's eligibility still under appeal, bettors are pricing a Gonzaga team that is talented but not yet the one the preseason rankings imagined.
