Quick take
  • Central Arkansas should win the possession battle with its pressure and steals, while Oral Roberts hunts threes against a defense that allowed plenty last season.
  • Connor Dow and a reshuffled Oral Roberts backcourt against Luke Moore and Ty Robinson, a pair that combined for 3.5 steals a game last season.
  • Central Arkansas is an 8.5-point favorite with a 154.5 total, unchanged since Nov. 1. Oral Roberts ranked 312th in turnover rate last season.

The ball-security problem

Both teams open their seasons tonight in Conway, and the most reliable thread connecting last season to this one runs through the backcourts. Central Arkansas was picked to win the United Athletic Conference in its first year in the league. Oral Roberts was picked 7th in the Summit. The gap between those two projections shows up most clearly in who keeps the ball.

Oral Roberts turned it over on 18.9% of its possessions last season, 312th of 365 Division I teams. Central Arkansas sat on the other side of that ledger. The Bears forced turnovers at a 19.5% rate, 53rd nationally, and their steal rate ranked 27th. Turnover rate is simply the share of possessions that end in a giveaway, and the Golden Eagles' rate turned a mediocre offense into a poor one.

The pressure starts with returners. Ty Robinson averaged 1.9 steals and Luke Moore 1.6 last season, and both are back. Oral Roberts brings back Connor Dow but loses Ty Harper, who handled the ball on a huge share of its possessions. Fresh guards against a defense that lives in passing lanes is the matchup most likely to decide this one.

Threes for days, twos for free

Last season Central Arkansas's defense gave opponents a steady diet of threes. Opponents took 52.6% of their shots from deep, the 2nd-highest share in the country. That suits Oral Roberts in theory: the Golden Eagles took 46.1% of their shots from three, 44th most. They just didn't make them, finishing 278th at 32.3%.

The Bears' weak spot was inside. Opponents shot 56.7% on twos against them, 350th nationally, and their block rate ranked 327th. Oral Roberts made 51.8% of its twos last season, so the open lane is there if the newcomers attack it rather than settling for jumpers.

Central Arkansas was efficient at both shot types on offense, with an effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 54.3%, 71st. Oral Roberts allowed opponents to hit 35.6% from three, 303rd, which gives the Bears' shooters an inviting target.

Who's left from last season

Last season's numbers are a shaky guide for both rosters. Central Arkansas returns 56.7% of its minutes but loses Camren Hunter, who scored 21.0 points a game. Robinson steps into the lead role after averaging 14.2 points with a 124.6 offensive rating, and he made 37.4% of his threes. He and Utah State transfer Tucker Anderson both made the preseason All-UAC team. The Bears return nine players and added six newcomers.

Oral Roberts has even more to replace. The Golden Eagles return 51.6% of their minutes and just 42.2% of their points, with six returners and nine newcomers. Dow, a preseason All-Summit first-team pick, is the top returning scorer at 12.5 points a game. Forward Luke Gray scored efficiently in a part-time starting role, posting a 115.7 offensive rating. The Bears also played bigger, averaging 77.4 inches in minutes-weighted height to Oral Roberts' 75.5.

Central Arkansas listed no injuries on an Oct. 30 report. Nothing has surfaced on Oral Roberts' availability.

What the market sees

Central Arkansas is favored by 8.5, with a total of 154.5 across nine books. Neither number has moved since the feed first saw the game on Nov. 1. The moneyline has the Bears at -410.

Last season's final ratings frame the gap: Central Arkansas finished 159th in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents), Oral Roberts 307th. Those are last season's teams, though, and both lost their leading scorer.

The total leans on tempo. Both teams played fast last season, ranking 80th and 84th in pace, and both shoot plenty of threes. A game full of possessions and long rebounds fits a total of 154.5. Turnovers cut both ways here: Bears steals can lead to quick points, but empty Oral Roberts trips can also stall the scoring.
