Ohio Bobcats vs South Alabama Jaguars prediction: South Alabama dares Ohio to shoot threes it couldn't make last season
The Jaguars' defence pushed opponents to the arc more than any team in the country last season, and the Bobcats' scoring lived inside it.
| Spread | South Alabama -1 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 154.5 |
- Expect a slow, grinding game in Mobile if South Alabama keeps last season's tempo and packs the paint against Ohio's interior scoring.
- Ohio's jump shooting against the Jaguars' arc-first defence: the Bobcats hit 30.9% from three last season, 327th in Division I.
- No spread or total is posted yet; South Alabama's last-season pace of 64.3 possessions per 40 minutes ranked 330th.
The dare at the arc
South Alabama ran one of the most extreme defensive schemes in college basketball last season. Opponents took 65.0% of their shots from three against the Jaguars, the highest rate in Division I. They made only 32.7% of those attempts, 125th in the country. The Jaguars also kept opponents off the line: their opponent free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) of 24.3% ranked fourth.
That shape is a poor fit for the Ohio offence of last season. The Bobcats made 30.9% of their threes, 327th of 365. Inside the arc they were far better, converting 55.5% of their twos, 60th nationally. If Richie Riley's scheme carries over, Ohio will be asked to beat South Alabama with the shot it trusted least. Ohio has added a listed transfer center, Moek Icke from Rhode Island, but how much he changes the inside game against a crowded lane is unknown.
A pace that favours patience
The Jaguars played slowly last season, at 64.3 possessions per 40 minutes, 330th in the country. Ohio ran at 69 possessions, 111th. The home team usually gets more say over tempo, and a game played closer to South Alabama's speed means fewer chances for Ohio to find transition baskets before the half-court defence sets.
No spread, total or moneyline has been posted yet, so there is no market read. When a total does appear, the tempo gap is the first thing worth weighing against it.
Where possessions are won
South Alabama protected the ball as well as almost anyone last season. Its turnover rate (turnovers per 100 possessions) of 13.1% ranked fifth in Division I, and its steal rate of 12.2% ranked 32nd. That combination tilts the possession battle before a shot goes up.
The Jaguars gave some of that edge back on the glass. They grabbed just 25.4% of their own misses, 343rd in the country, so they rarely punish a weak defensive rebounding team. And if this one stays close late, watch the line: South Alabama made 65.8% of its free throws last season, 357th of 365.
New faces, old numbers
Everything above comes from last season, and both rosters have changed. Our data doesn't show how many minutes either team brings back, so treat those baselines as a rough guide. South Alabama went 21-12 and ended its season with an NIT loss to Auburn. Ohio finished 15-17, falling to Kent State in the MAC tournament quarterfinals.
The Jaguars added guard Jalen Langsy, an NAIA First Team All-American, plus Russian forward Alexey Sereda and transfers Owen Kenney and Aaron Goldstein. Ohio, under Jeff Boals, is listed with point guards Kolton Mitchell from Idaho and Kyler D'Augustino from IU Indy alongside Icke. Neither team has reported an injury, though Ohio's status hasn't been confirmed as current.
Last season's final adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) had South Alabama at -2.6 and Ohio at -5.4. The gap is modest. The home floor and the Jaguars' distinctive defence give them a slight edge here.
