Oakwood vs Alabama A&M prediction: Alabama A&M opens at home by chasing the free-throw line again
The Bulldogs open their regular season against Oakwood with last season's foul-drawing identity and a 71-61 exhibition loss at Samford still fresh.
- Alabama A&M opens at home against Oakwood, a team we hold no Division I data for, and last season's foul-drawing profile is the clearest guide to where its points might come from.
- Watch the Bulldogs' interior attack: they drew fouls at an elite clip last season but finished poorly inside the arc.
- No spread or total has been posted; last season's 18-15 record is the clearest baseline for the Bulldogs.
Living at the line
Alabama A&M's sharpest weapon last season was getting to the stripe. Its free throw rate, free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt, was 44.9%, 4th of 365 Division I teams. The Bulldogs made 73.8% of those attempts, so the trips paid off.
The defence gave some of that back. Opponents posted a 38.4% free throw rate, 287th nationally, which means the Bulldogs fouled too much. Against a lower-level visitor in a season opener, how often they send Oakwood to the line is worth watching.
The finishing problem
The foul-drawing masked a scoring issue. Alabama A&M shot 48.2% on two-pointers last season, 331st in the country, and its effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) ranked 291st. Second chances were scarce too: the offensive rebound rate ranked 290th.
Last season's final adjusted net efficiency, points per 100 possessions adjusted for opponents, sat at -15.2, 315th. Roster changes make those figures a loose guide, but the home opener is a chance to show the interior offence has improved.
Year two for Donte' Jackson
Donte' Jackson enters his second season, and the one exhibition so far ended in a loss. The Bulldogs fell 71-61 in an Oct. 13 exhibition at Samford, where redshirt freshman Jayden Jackson's late three capped a run that cut the deficit to eight. The school's undated roster page lists Canisius transfer Javantae Edwards and junior-college addition Jalen Carruth. Coverage of the Samford game did not mention any absences.
The Bulldogs have one more tune-up, the Oct. 23 HBCU Showcase in Detroit, before Oakwood visits the AAMU Event Center on Nov. 2. The two schools met in a 2023 exhibition that Alabama A&M won 111-59. Oakwood, coached by athletics director Simon Jacob, has no current roster news available.
