Northwestern St Demons vs Baylor Bears prediction: Baylor's rebuilt backcourt debuts against a Northwestern State missing Izzy Miles
Two heavily reshaped rosters open the season in Waco, and Baylor's transfer guards and work on the glass give it every edge it needs against a slow, short-handed visitor.
| Spread | Baylor -32 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 151.5 |
- Baylor's transfer guards should control a game Northwestern State wants to slow down; the real test is how quickly Baylor's new rotation jells.
- Baylor's offensive glass: last season it ranked 19th in offensive rebound rate, while Northwestern State ranked 279th in defensive rebound rate.
- Baylor is favored by 32.5 after first showing at -30.5; the 151.5 total faces a visitor that ranked 357th in pace last season.
Baylor's transfers take the keys
Baylor opens its season tonight with a largely new cast. Players on this season's roster logged just 25.1% of last season's minutes, so last year's team numbers describe a different team. The newcomers carrying the backcourt arrived from Liberty and Penn State.
Brett Decker Jr. is the headliner. He shot 47.1% from three at Liberty last season on 242 attempts, the kind of volume and accuracy that bends a defense from the opening possession. Kayden Mingo brings the other half of the guard attack after averaging 13.7 points and 2.1 steals at Penn State, and Dylan Mingo is expected to be part of the same guard-driven group. Up front, Yale transfer Isaac Celiscar posted an offensive rating of 137.1 last season, a sign of a forward who rarely wastes a touch.
The preseason backed up the roster sheet. Baylor beat Florida 82-76 in an exhibition. It then outscored Illinois 95-91. Isaac Williams IV, the top returning scorer at 10.4 points per game last season, gives the group some continuity. Center Juslin Bodo Bodo missed all of last season with an arm injury and appeared at Scott Drew's pre-opener press session on Oct. 30, but Baylor hasn't said whether he plays.
Northwestern State starts over short-handed
Rick Cabrera's team is just as new. Players on the Demons' roster logged 26.0% of last season's minutes, and the one proven scorer left is unavailable. Izzy Miles was sidelined indefinitely as of Nov. 1 with no return date. He averaged 10.5 points last season and made 39.7% of his threes.
Without him, the offense leans on newcomers. Micah Thomas and his 16.8 points per game are gone, and transfers such as Northern Arizona guard Arne Osojnik and Jackson State center Dionjahe Thomas must fill shots and minutes. Thomas pulled down 5.3 rebounds per game last season. The Demons' only exhibition was a 62-60 win over North Texas, which says they can grind but not much more.
Second chances and the foul line
The clearest structural edge is on the glass. Last season Baylor grabbed 37.2% of its own misses (offensive rebound rate), 19th in the country. Northwestern State ranked 279th in defensive rebound rate. Even with new faces, Baylor's size and forwards like UAB transfer Evan Chatman point the same way.
Northwestern State's best weapon last season was getting to the line: it ranked 52nd in free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt). Baylor's defense ranked 62nd at keeping opponents off the line. If the Demons can't earn cheap points there, their half-court offense has little to lean on.
Pace fight over a big number
The style clash decides the total. Northwestern State played at 63.1 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 357th of 365. Baylor played at 69.1, 105th. A visitor this outmatched has every reason to drain the shot clock and shorten the game.
The market has moved, and it has moved toward Baylor. The total sits at 151.5 after first showing at 148.5, while the spread has grown from -30.5 to -32.5, the favorite getting more expensive. The only recent meeting was lopsided: Baylor won 91-40 in Waco in December 2023, though neither roster resembles that one.
