Northern Kentucky Norse vs UTEP Miners prediction: UTEP's 15 newcomers favored as Northern Kentucky's portal build debuts
Neither team looks much like last season's version, and the market is betting on Joe Golding's brand-new Miners over Darrin Horn's retooled Norse on a neutral floor in South Dakota.
| Spread | UTEP -2.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 150.75 |
- Two rebuilt rosters open the season in Sioux Falls. Whichever transfer backcourt settles first should control the shape of the afternoon.
- Watch UTEP guards Leif Moeller and Reese Miller against Ethan Elliott, Northern Kentucky's lone returning starter, who averaged 4.6 assists last season.
- UTEP moved from -1.5 to -2.5 even though it returns 0.0% of last season's minutes. The total sits at 148.75.
Nobody knows these Miners
UTEP walks into the Sanford Pentagon with a roster that has never played a meaningful game together. The Miners lost all five starters for the second straight year, and Golding's staff brought in 15 new players. The share of last season's minutes returning is 0.0%. UTEP was picked to finish ninth out of 10 in the Mountain West preseason poll, largely because of the unknown roster.
The market sees it differently. UTEP is a 2.5-point favorite after our feed first saw the line at 1.5, and the move came toward the Miners. Last season's numbers offer little guidance. UTEP finished 265th in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) at -9.1. That describes a team whose players have all left. The real case for UTEP rests on the transfers who arrived and on Golding's system.
The tip is set for 2:00 PM ET. It's the first meeting between the programs and the first Pentagon appearance for both, part of the Field of 68 Opening Day Marathon.
Horn's portal starting five
Northern Kentucky isn't much more familiar. The Norse bring back 23.8% of last season's minutes and just 11.2% of its points. The scorers who drove a 20-14 season are gone, led by Donovan Oday (now at Troy) and LJ Wells (now at Louisville).
Horn built around the portal. In the exhibition win over UT Martin, he started Ethan Elliott alongside four transfers from La Salle, Niagara, SMU and East Texas A&M. Elliott is a pure distributor: he made just 25.6% of his threes last season, so defenses can play off him. The likeliest go-to scorer is Noah Pagotto, who hit 37.3% from deep at East Texas A&M with an offensive rating of 121.5.
Horn's track record matters here. Northern Kentucky has finished above .500 in each of his first seven seasons, which suggests he gets rebuilt rosters functional quickly.
Guards against guards
UTEP's transfer class is guard-heavy and experienced. Leif Moeller started every game at Evansville, averaging 10.8 points and 4.0 assists. Reese Miller came off the bench at William & Mary but carried a 24.3% usage rate, higher than any other UTEP transfer listed. Jace Whiting shot 82.4% at the line at Weber State, a useful trait if this stays as tight as the spread suggests.
The Miners also have more size. Their minutes-weighted average height of 78.7 inches tops Northern Kentucky's 77.1. East Carolina transfer Reid Cason averaged 1.0 block in 15.2 minutes. Will Shortt, Northern Kentucky's interior presence from Niagara, shot 60.5% from the floor but just 43.6% at the line, so fouling him is a viable plan.
Tempo and the total
The coaches are the only real link to last season's styles. Horn's team played fast, at 71 possessions per 40 minutes (39th nationally), and allowed 77.5 points per game (278th). Golding's Miners played at 66.3 possessions (250th).
The total has barely moved, from 148.5 when our feed first saw it to 148.75. That leaves the pace question open. If Horn gets his tempo, early-season defensive breakdowns from two unfamiliar rosters could push scoring up. If Golding slows things down and leans on his size, possessions shrink.
