Northeastern Huskies vs Boston Univ. Terriers prediction: Rashad King's homecoming opens a crosstown rivalry of rebuilt rosters
Boston University and Northeastern both lost most of last season's production, so tonight's opener at Case Gym turns on which set of returners and newcomers grows into its role first.
| Spread | Boston University -2 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 148.5 |
- Expect a tight, feel-out opener: two heavily rebuilt rosters, a pace tug-of-war, and a series whose last meeting went to overtime.
- Rashad King, back from LSU as a preseason first-team All-CAA pick, against a BU backcourt led by returning shooter Azmar Abdullah.
- BU is favored by 0.75 after our feed first saw a pick'em; the total moved from 149.5 to 150.
Two programs starting over
The 154th crosstown meeting tips at 7 p.m. ET tonight on Commonwealth Avenue, and almost nobody who decided last year's game is still deciding this one. Northeastern leads the all-time series by a single game, 77-76, and Boston University won the last meeting 76-75 in overtime.
That close history is about the only continuity on the floor. Northeastern returns 34.0% of last season's minutes. BU brings back 41.6%, and seven of the 15 players on its roster are new after the Terriers lost their three best players to high-major programs. Last season's team numbers are a weak guide for both sides, so the useful question is who is actually back.
BU's shooting left with McNair
Last season BU was one of the country's best shooting teams. Its effective field goal percentage, which counts threes as 1.5 field goals, ranked 10th in Division I, and it made 39.3% of its threes, 5th nationally. The engine of that is gone: Mike McNair Jr. hit 44.4% from deep and is now at Maryland, with Chance Gladden off to San Diego State and Ben Defty to Arizona State.
What remains is two capable floor-spacers. Azmar Abdullah shot 39.4% from three and Sam Hughes made 68 threes; they are the only returning starters from last season's Patriot League title game. Joe Jones, in his 16th season, expects Penn transfer Michelangelo Oberti and freshman Darnell Lloyd to help right away up front. Kyrone Alexander, a preseason All-Patriot League selection, is back after injury cost him nearly all of last season, though BU hasn't given any update on his workload for the opener.
King returns to a thin defense
Northeastern's problem last season was stopping anyone. The Huskies went 7-24 and ranked 344th in defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions). Opponents shot 57.8% inside the arc, 359th of 365, so a BU frontcourt even moderately effective around the rim could find room.
The offense now runs through Rashad King, a former first-team All-CAA guard who spent last season at LSU and came back for his graduate year. His LSU line was modest, 5.8 points while shooting 29.5% from three, so he arrives as a proven CAA scorer with a quiet season to shake off. Around him, Mike Loughnane averaged 3.8 assists and Ryan Williams shot 42.5% from deep in limited minutes. Bill Coen, in his 20th season, is blending in a large class of newcomers, and the roster carries 11 freshmen and sophomores.
A tempo tug-of-war
Last season BU played at 63.3 possessions per 40 minutes, 354th in the country, while Northeastern ran at 69, 111th. Neither defense did much to dictate terms: BU's forced turnover rate ranked 353rd, so the Terriers rarely sped opponents up, and Northeastern's opponent effective field goal percentage ranked 358th.
The total of 150 implies a fairly efficient game. If BU's new pieces settle into last season's deliberate rhythm, possessions shrink; if Northeastern's younger roster pushes, the game opens up. Opening-night rust from two reworked rotations cuts the other way.
What the market sees
Books have this nearly even. BU is a 0.75-point favorite with moneylines of -111.5 for the Terriers and -109 for the Huskies. Our feed first recorded the game as a pick'em, so the small move has gone BU's way, and the total ticked up from 149.5.
The closeness tracks last season's opponent-adjusted ratings, which had BU at 261st in net efficiency and Northeastern at 278th. Home court and the edge in returning minutes are BU's case; King's return is Northeastern's.
- Whether Abdullah and Hughes can replace some of McNair's volume from three
- King's shot selection in his first game back in a Northeastern uniform
- BU's newcomers against a Huskies interior that allowed easy twos last season
- Alexander's minutes, if he plays
