Quick take
  • Georgia's returning core should control early against an Eagles roster built almost entirely from newcomers, and its fast tempo can stretch the margin.
  • NC Central's pressure against Georgia's guards: the Eagles forced turnovers at the 10th-highest rate last season, but nearly all those players are gone.
  • Georgia moved from -36 to -40. The total climbed to 163.5, fitting a Georgia team that ranked 11th in pace last season.

Fourteen strangers in Athens

Most season openers test conditioning. This one tests how well North Carolina Central's players know each other. LeVelle Moton, beginning his 18th season in charge, rebuilt almost from scratch: guard Ryan Archey is the only letterwinner back from last season's 14-18 team. Everyone else is new. Thirteen of the newcomers are transfers.

The scale of the turnover is stark. Players on this season's roster logged just 3.1% of the Eagles' minutes last season, and Archey came off the bench in all of his games. Gone is Gage Lattimore, the team's top scorer at 16.6 points a game, who is now at James Madison. Last season's team numbers are a weak guide to tonight's Eagles, and the opening stretch, before a brand-new rotation settles, is where this game is most likely to tilt hard.

The MEAC's coaches and sports information directors still picked the Eagles fourth in the league, a vote of confidence in the transfers Moton gathered. The most experienced is Christian Meeks, a senior power forward who averaged 5.8 rebounds for MEAC rival Morgan State.

Georgia's core stays intact

Georgia is the opposite story. Mike White, in his fifth season, returns three players who averaged double figures for a team that reached the NCAA Tournament, and the program counts itself among the few power-conference teams bringing back four season-ending starters. Blue Cain scored 13.1 points a game last season. Marcus Millender added 12.0 and shot 38.9% from three. Kanon Catchings and Kareem Stagg are back as well.

The losses are real. Jeremiah Wilkinson, last season's top scorer, left for Arkansas, and center Somto Cyril took his shot-blocking to Miami. White answered from the portal. Freddie Dilione V averaged 14.0 points at Penn State, and Brady Dunlap hit 45.1% of his threes at Saint Louis. James Scott, a 6-foot-11 senior from Ole Miss, and Andrew Osasuyi give Georgia rim protection to replace Cyril.

No starting five has been announced, and no injuries have been reported for either team. Freshman forward Hakeem Weems was described as banged up in late September, with no update since. Media voters picked Georgia 11th in the SEC, and no Bulldog made a preseason All-SEC team, so there is a chip on this group's shoulder too.

Tempo and a climbing total

Tempo and a climbing total Georgia played fast last season: 72.7 possessions per 40 minutes, 11th in Division I. It scored 89.4 points a game and allowed plenty, too. That profile explains why the total opened high and kept rising, to 163.5 from 156.5 when the line first appeared.

The glass could add possessions. Georgia was one of the country's weaker defensive rebounding teams last season, ranking 346th, while its offense crashed hard. The Eagles ranked 364th in defensive rebounding, though with almost no one back, that figure says more about last season than tonight. Second chances for Georgia's bigs are the likeliest way the Bulldogs pile on points late.

Pressure against a 37.5-point gap

Pressure against a 40-point gap Georgia is favored by 40 points, up from 36 when the line first appeared. Last season's final adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) had Georgia 31st and North Carolina Central 346th. The last meeting, in Athens in November 2023, ended Georgia 64, North Carolina Central 54, though neither roster resembles that one.

The Eagles' best trait last season was pressure. They forced turnovers on 21.8% of possessions, 10th in the country. Georgia protected the ball well, ranking 35th in turnover rate. Whether Moton's new group can press like last year's is the clearest unknown against a spread this large. If it can't, Georgia's pace and returning guards make for a long night in Stegeman.
