North American vs Nicholls prediction: Darion Brown's Nicholls debut draws a USCAA champion from North American

A new coach opens at Stopher Gymnasium against a national-title winner from outside Division I, and last season's ball-hawking defence may be the only carryover worth trusting.

Quick take
  • Nicholls should control a home opener against a non-Division I visitor, though a new coach makes rotations and style hard to forecast.
  • Nicholls' pressure against North American's ball-handlers: last season the Colonels ranked 13th nationally in steal rate.
  • No spread or total posted yet; last season Nicholls forced turnovers at a 21.1% rate, 15th of 365.

A new bench in Thibodaux

Nicholls opens the Darion Brown era on Monday, Nov. 2, with an 11 a.m. local tip at Stopher Gymnasium. Brown was named the program's 14th head coach on June 30, 2026, after two seasons at Texas A&M–Texarkana from 2024 to 2026.

That hire is the reason to read last season's numbers loosely. The Colonels went 14-19 in 2025-26 and finished 238th of 365 in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents). A new staff, and a 2026-27 roster that remains unclear, means that profile describes a different program as much as this one.

The visitors bring a trophy

North American is no pushover by its own standards. The Stallions won the 2026 USCAA Men's Division I national title, beating Bryant & Stratton–Syracuse 89-74 in Buffalo on March 6, and finished 22-8. Bryan Doze Jr. enters his third season in charge.

That is continuity Nicholls lacks. Still, the Stallions play outside Division I, and nothing about their 2026-27 roster is public, so their title run says little about how they handle Southland-level size and athleticism.

What carried over, and what didn't

If anything from last season's Nicholls identity survives, watch the defence's hands. The Colonels forced turnovers on 21.1% of opponent possessions, 15th nationally, and ranked 13th in steal rate. Against a smaller-school backcourt, that pressure could decide the game early.

The rest of that defence was a problem. Opponents posted a 53.9% effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times), 321st nationally, and Nicholls ranked 315th in defensive rebounding. A free-throw percentage of 66.7%, 347th, also left points on the floor. Whether Brown fixes the glass and the stripe is the more interesting question than the final margin.

No injury, suspension or eligibility news had surfaced for either team as of Oct. 14, and no line had been posted.

Numbers that matter

Forced turnover rate, last season21.1%Ranked 15th of 365 in 2025-26, the strongest piece of Nicholls' profile against a non-Division I opponent.
Opponent eFG%, last season53.9%Ranked 321st in 2025-26, the shooting defence Brown inherits.
Free throw %, last season66.7%Ranked 347th of 365, a weakness that matters in any closer-than-expected game.
North American record, last season22-8Capped by a USCAA national title, an 89-74 win over Bryant & Stratton–Syracuse.
