New Haven Chargers vs Syracuse Orange prediction: Gerry McNamara's rebuilt Syracuse opens against New Haven's slow grind

Both rosters are almost entirely new, so tonight's real questions are who plays for Syracuse and whether New Haven can still drag the game into the mud.

Consensus of US sportsbooks, updated Nov 2, 6:02 PM ET.

Quick take
  • Syracuse's transfer-heavy roster should control the game, while New Haven tries to shorten it the way it did last season.
  • Luke Wilson and the Syracuse bigs against a New Haven team that ranked 30th in defensive rebound rate last season.
  • Syracuse is favored by 27.5; the total fell from 140 to 132.5, in line with New Haven's 339th-ranked pace last season.

An Orange built from elsewhere

Gerry McNamara has already coached Syracuse in exhibitions, but tonight is the first one that counts. Syracuse fired Adrian Autry after last season's 15-17 finish and brought McNamara home from Siena, where he had just reached the NCAA Tournament. He rebuilt almost everything. Players on this roster account for just 15.6% of last season's minutes, so last season's Syracuse team numbers say little about this group.

The new core came through the portal. Gavin Doty followed McNamara from Siena after averaging 18.0 points with an offensive rating of 125.2 (points produced per 100 possessions used). Luke Wilson arrives from App State as an efficient finisher with a 64.3% effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times). Kiyan Anthony and Sadiq White Jr., the main returners, are expected to play bigger roles.

The exhibitions were mixed. UConn won 72-52 on Oct. 13, then Syracuse beat Siena on Oct. 18 and closed with a trip to Niagara. The ACC preseason poll slotted the Orange 11th.

Tobiason's hamstring hangs over it

The biggest unknown is Aiden Tobiason. The Temple transfer, who averaged 15.3 points last season, grabbed his hamstring less than two minutes into the UConn exhibition. A team spokesperson called him day-to-day before the Siena game. A report after that game said he would be out a few weeks, and a preview this month said his availability for the opener was still to be seen. Syracuse hasn't announced a ruling. McNamara also said after Siena that multiple players were dealing with injuries, without naming all of them.

There is better news elsewhere. Mark Morano Mahmutovič missed the UConn game with an injury, then returned against Siena and scored 18 points. Freshman Ryan Moesch ran the offense cleanly in the exhibitions, with 16 assists against five turnovers. If Tobiason sits, Moesch and McNeese transfer Garwey Dual figure to handle more of the ball.

New Haven starts over too

The Chargers turned over their roster as well. They return 24.1% of last season's minutes. Three of last season's starters are gone: Jabri Fitzpatrick, who averaged 15.0 points, to Eastern Michigan, Najimi George to Samford and Andre Pasha to Bryant. Graduate guard Kheni Briggs is expected to start more often and lead the scoring after averaging 6.9 points last season.

Last season's New Haven won with defense. It ranked 67th nationally in defensive efficiency while sitting 336th on offense, and it finished fifth in the NEC under longtime coach Ted Hotaling. The program is still in its move up from Division II, and the people who made that defense work are mostly gone.

A slow pace and a falling total

New Haven played at 64.1 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 339th in the country. It barely crashed the offensive glass, ranking 351st in offensive rebound rate, but it cleaned up its own misses at a 30th-ranked rate. That is a team built to get back, finish possessions and keep the score low. Whether a new roster plays the same way is the open question.

The market has bought the slow version. Since our feed first recorded the line, the total has dropped from 140 to 132.5, while the spread ticked toward Syracuse, to 27.5. Last season's final adjusted ratings put Syracuse 82nd in net efficiency and New Haven 326th. The question for a number this large is whether fewer possessions leave Syracuse enough time to pull away, especially if Tobiason is in street clothes.
