New Hampshire Wildcats vs Brown Bears prediction: Reveno's Brown debut tests a gutted New Hampshire backcourt
Brown's turnover-hunting defense opens a new coaching era against a UNH roster that brings back only a third of last season's scoring.
| Spread | Brown -8.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 145 |
- Expect a grind: Brown's opportunistic defense against a rebuilt UNH offense returning only 33.4% of last season's scoring.
- Tyler Bike against Brown's perimeter defense: UNH lives on threes, and Bike, at 37.5% last season, is its only proven shooter.
- Brown -8.5 hasn't moved since our feed first saw it; the total slipped from 144 to 143.5.
A new coach, a familiar defense
Eric Reveno takes over a Brown roster that returns 12 players and a defense that carried the Bears through a 9-18 season. His first game as the program's 32nd head coach is Monday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center, against a New Hampshire team picked last in the America East coaches' poll.
Brown's trouble last season was scoring, not stopping people. Its defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions) ranked 62nd of 365, and the Bears forced turnovers on 19.8% of opponent possessions, 47th nationally. Jeremiah Jenkins, last season's team leader in assists and steals, is back to set the tone at the point of attack.
Reveno arrives from Stanford, where he was associate head coach, and replaces Mike Martin, who left to become an assistant at Michigan. He brought in Doc Eslinger as associate head coach. How much of last season's defensive identity survives the coaching transition is the first thing to watch.
New Hampshire starts over
The Wildcats went 9-21 and then lost most of the team. Players on this season's roster logged just 43.7% of last season's minutes. The biggest loss is Belal El Shakery, who averaged 11.4 points and 8.2 rebounds before leaving for Oakland.
The core that remains is steady rather than explosive. Davide Poser and John Squire started all 30 games last season, and Squire posted a 60% effective field goal percentage (a shooting measure that counts threes as 1.5 makes) in a low-usage interior role. Tyler Bike earned America East All-Rookie honors. Transfers Erik Oliver-Bush (Manhattan) and Drew McKenna (Old Dominion) played modest minutes at their previous stops. Last season's numbers are a weak guide for a roster this new, but they set a low floor: UNH's adjusted offense, which accounts for opponent strength, finished 355th. Fourth-year coach Nathan Davis needs his returners to grow into bigger roles fast.
Threes UNH has to make
New Hampshire built its offense around the arc last season, taking 43.5% of its shots from three. It made just 30.9% of them, 328th nationally. That volume-without-accuracy profile collides with a Brown defense that let opponents fire away, allowing a 42.5% three-point attempt rate.
Bike is the swing player. He hit 37.5% of his 144 attempts as a freshman, the only returner who shot it well; Poser made 32.6% on 175 tries. If Bike gets clean looks against Brown's rotations, UNH can hang around. If not, the Wildcats have little else to lean on.
One UNH strength does carry over: it rebounded 74.1% of opponents' misses, 25th in the country, which could limit Brown's second chances. The flip side shows up late. UNH made 66.0% of its free throws last season, 355th, a real liability if this stays close.
Where the number sits
Seven books have Brown at -8.5, unchanged since our feed first logged the game Sunday, with the Bears around -470 on the moneyline. The total has dipped from 144 to 143.5.
That total asks a lot of two offenses that ranked 323rd (Brown) and 346th (UNH) in efficiency last season. The recent series points the same way: Brown won 76-58 at home two seasons ago and 59-47 at UNH last November, winning its last two meetings.
Both teams play again quickly, UNH at Rider on Nov. 5 and Brown hosting Boston University on Nov. 6, so neither has reason to hold back depth in an opener.
