Mount Olive vs UNC Wilmington prediction: UNC Wilmington opens as CAA favorite with Wessler, health questions

Division II Mount Olive is the first audience for a Seahawks roster stocked with transfers and players coming back from lost seasons.

Quick take
  • UNCW should control a home opener against a Division II visitor; the real interest is who plays and how the new pieces fit.
  • Watch UNCW's injury returnees, Luster II and Prodanovic, after both missed all of 2025-26.
  • No spread or total is posted yet. Last season UNCW allowed 29.8% from three, ninth nationally, a baseline for its defense.

A champion's first step

UNC Wilmington opens its regular season on Monday, Nov. 2, as the team the rest of the Coastal Athletic Association is chasing. The Seahawks drew 11 first-place votes in the preseason poll, ahead of Charleston and Hofstra, after winning last season's regular-season title at 27-7 overall and 15-3 in league play.

The last memory is a sour one: an 85-70 loss to Campbell in the CAA Tournament. Takayo Siddle, entering his seventh season, starts the response at Trask Coliseum against Division II Mount Olive. Reports conflict over who is coaching the Trojans this season.

The defense is the identity

Last season's Seahawks won by making shots hard. Opponents posted an effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 47.1%, 28th of 365, and hit 29.8% from deep, ninth in Division I. UNCW also controlled the glass, grabbing 36.0% of its own misses, 36th nationally.

The offense was the softer half. UNCW made 49.8% of its twos (288th) and 68.3% of its free throws (316th). Against a Division II opponent that may not matter Monday, but it is worth watching as a carryover habit.

Who is back, who is new

The roster story is about bodies returning. Wessler, the CAA Preseason Player of the Year, leads a group of returners that includes Jahnathan Lamothe, Gavin Walsh and Makel Smith. Luster II, a preseason all-conference pick a year ago, missed last season with an injury, as did Prodanovic; neither player's current status has been reported. Walsh's knee injury ended his 2025-26 season early, and an Oct. 10 team fan guide listed him without an injury note.

Transfers Spencer Elliott, Treyvon Maddox, Tyler Nelson and Tahlan Pettway join, so last season's team numbers are only a rough guide.
