Morehead St Eagles vs Western Kentucky Hilltoppers prediction: Teagan Moore leads a remade WKU against a nearly new Morehead State

Two rebuilt rosters open the season in Bowling Green, but only Western Kentucky brings back a proven star, and that gap shapes everything from the spread to the free-throw line.

Quick take
  • Expect WKU to run its offense through Teagan Moore against a Morehead roster that played just 26.2% of last season's minutes.
  • Watch Morehead's guards attack the rim against a WKU defense whose opponent free throw rate ranked 354th last season.
  • WKU is a 17.5-point favorite, up from 16.5; Morehead's roster scored only 19.5% of last season's points.

Two rosters starting over

Season openers between rebuilt teams usually turn on one question: who has something that already works? Tonight in Bowling Green, Western Kentucky has an answer and Morehead State is still looking for one.

WKU's preseason roster lists five returners and nine newcomers. Its current players logged 38.0% of last season's minutes. Morehead State is starting over even more completely. Its roster played 26.2% of last season's minutes, and the departures include George Marshall and Jon Carroll, two of the top scorers on a team that shared the OVC regular-season title. Carroll is now at Drake.

That turnover makes last season's team numbers a weak guide. For the record, Morehead's adjusted net rating (points scored minus allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) finished last season 282nd of 365. WKU closed at 158th. The newer evidence isn't kind to the Eagles either: they lost both of their exhibition games.

Moore is the known quantity

Teagan Moore, the preseason Conference USA Player of the Year, is the most reliable piece in this game. Last season he averaged 18.7 points. He shot 42.9% from three while carrying a heavy share of WKU's possessions, with an offensive rating (points produced per 100 possessions used) of 131.4.

Armelo Boone is expected to lead alongside him, though Boone made only 24.4% of his threes last season, so he does his damage going downhill. Third-year coach Hank Plona went to the portal for shooting and size. Noah Norgaard made 37.2% of his threes at UNC Greensboro, and Emondrek Erkins-Ford shot 53.2% from the field at Jacksonville State.

Morehead, under third-year coach Jonathan Mattox, has no returner with that kind of production. Chase Dawson is the most experienced holdover after averaging 8.3 points last season. Neither team has a reported starting five.

Where Morehead can hang around

WKU played whistle-heavy games at both ends last season. The Hilltoppers drew free throws at one of the highest rates in the country, ranking 31st in free throw rate (free-throw attempts per field-goal attempt). They also gave them away. Their opponent free throw rate ranked 354th, near the bottom of Division I.

That is the clearest opening for the underdog. Morehead's offense last season lived inside the arc and rarely shot threes, ranking 346th in three-point attempt rate. If the Eagles' new guards keep attacking the paint, WKU's fouling habit can stop runs and keep the margin manageable. The Hilltoppers will want Moore and the transfers to punish the other end, because their own two-point shooting ranked 355th last season.

The glass without Carroll

Morehead's best trait last season was second chances. The Eagles rebounded 36.4% of their own misses, 30th nationally. The trouble is who did the work. Carroll averaged 7.9 rebounds before leaving, and no returner comes close to that.

The defensive glass is the bigger worry. Morehead ranked 338th in defensive rebound rate last season, and that was with Carroll. If that weakness carries over to a new, smaller-production roster, WKU's guards will get repeat looks, and second shots for a team chasing a big number are how a lead stretches late.

Where the number sits

The market treats this as a mismatch. WKU is a 17.5-point favorite, and the line has moved toward the Hilltoppers from 16.5 when our feed first recorded it. The total sits at 153 after first appearing at 153.5.

The move fits the roster picture: one team returns a conference player of the year, the other returns almost none of its scoring. The counterweight is variance. Opening night with this much roster churn is guesswork for both staffs, and a WKU team that fouled as often as it did last season can hand a big underdog free points late.
