Miami (OH) RedHawks vs James Madison Dukes prediction: Half of a 32-2 Miami team visits a rebuilt James Madison
The RedHawks bring back Skaljac, Woolfolk and Atlason to Harrisonburg, the Dukes bring back almost no one, and the market still calls it even.
| Spread | James Madison -1.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 158.5 |
- Miami's returning core gives it a head start, while JMU leans on transfers like Gage Lattimore.
- Miami's returning shooters, led by Almar Atlason and his 59 threes last season, against a JMU perimeter built almost entirely from transfers.
- James Madison moved from +1 to a pick'em. The 155.5 total leans on Miami's offense, first nationally in efficiency last season.
What Miami kept from 32-2
Miami went 32-2 last season, swept the MAC at 18-0 and beat SMU in the First Four. Its offense led all of Division I in efficiency at 132.2 points per 100 possessions. Then the roster split in half. Players on this season's team account for 48.5% of last season's minutes. Brant Byers left for Penn State, Eian Elmer for Wisconsin, and Peter Suder graduated.
James Madison's reset runs far deeper. Only 14.8% of last season's minutes return in Harrisonburg. Preston Spradlin, named head coach in April, built a roster of nine transfers and three first-year players. JMU's 18-15 record from last season says almost nothing about this group. Travis Steele, in his fifth season at Miami, has the continuity edge when the two tip tonight at 7 p.m. ET.
The shooting that left and stayed
Miami's offense lived on shot-making. Its effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) was 60.6%, second in the country, and it hit 38.7% from three. Elmer, a 42.9% shooter from deep, is gone.
What stays is meaningful. Almar Atlason made 59 threes off the bench and carried the highest usage of any returner. Justin Kirby shot 40.5% from three in a smaller role. Transfers Rich Rolf from Youngstown State and Stevie Elam from Milwaukee add volume on the wings.
JMU's answer starts with Gage Lattimore, who made 82 threes at a 39.2% clip at North Carolina Central. The Dukes also added two guards from power conferences, KJ Windham from Northwestern and Brandon Lee from Illinois. How quickly that backcourt learns to defend together is the first real test of Spradlin's build.
Woolfolk, Ipsaro and the paint
Antwone Woolfolk was described as graduated in a spring roster rundown, but he is expected back for a fifth year under an Ohio lawsuit. No ruling has been made public. If he plays, Miami gets a forward who started all 33 games and shot 62.9% from the field. His 55.2% free-throw shooting is the soft spot late in a close game.
Evan Ipsaro, Miami's best player before his December ACL tear, was named a key piece of the guard rotation in a May preview, but his current health hasn't been confirmed.
JMU's interior piece is Jacob Hogarth, who averaged 7.0 rebounds at Gardner-Webb. Miami won't fight him for many misses. Its offensive rebound rate ranked 328th last season, a team that shoots well enough not to crash.
Why the number is even
Our feed first saw James Madison as a 1-point underdog, and the line has moved to a pick'em. The total has ticked from 155.0 to 155.5. Home floor and a deep transfer haul appear to be offsetting Miami's returning core.
The total rests on efficiency, not tempo. Neither team ran last season: Miami ranked 219th in pace and JMU 233rd. One holdover trend favors Miami's ball handlers, with an asterisk. JMU forced turnovers on just 12.9% of possessions last season, 361st of 365, but almost none of those defenders are back.
