Quick take
  • Expect a slow, grinding game: both teams ranked near the bottom of Division I in pace last season, and Merrimack returns little of its rotation.
  • Watch App State's offensive rebounders against a Merrimack defense that finished 365th of 365 in defensive rebound rate last season.
  • No line has posted yet. When one does, the total should reflect last season's paces, which ranked 330th and 357th.

The glass Merrimack couldn't guard

The Field of 68 Opening Day Marathon revives a 24-hour tradition, and this game tips at 6 AM ET on Monday, Nov. 2, in Rock Hill, S.C. Two teams that won with defense last season will open on a neutral floor. The deciding question is who controls the misses.

Last season App State grabbed 34.5% of its own misses (offensive rebound rate), 68th nationally. Merrimack posted the worst defensive rebound rate in Division I at 60.1%, last of 365. The Warriors survived that because their defense rarely allowed clean looks, but any opponent that keeps crashing gets extra possessions in a game with few of them.

One caveat: that rebounding number belongs to last season's roster. Merrimack lost shot-blocking forward KC Ugwuakazi, who averaged 2.2 blocks, and much of the rotation around him. Rebuilt units sometimes clean up a weakness and sometimes make it worse.

Merrimack's hands, App State's handle

Merrimack's defensive identity last season was about taking the ball away. The Warriors forced turnovers on 20.5% of opponent possessions (turnover rate), 30th nationally, and ranked 20th in steal rate.

App State protected the ball well, giving it away on 15.3% of possessions, 79th in the country. If that security holds, Merrimack's chief source of easy offense dries up.

The returning disruptor is guard Tye Dorset, who averaged 1.8 steals in 36 minutes a night last season. Kevair Kennedy, the other half of that backcourt pressure, isn't on this season's roster. App State's defense works the other way: last season it ranked 330th in forced turnover rate, so it won't steal many extra possessions back.

Bad threes, good free throws

App State took plenty of threes last season and missed most of them. Its 3-point attempt rate ranked 47th, but it shot 30.3% from deep, 342nd nationally. The Mountaineers scored more reliably inside, where their 2-point shooting ranked 55th.

Merrimack's defense took the 3-point line away. Opponents' share of shots from three ranked 351st, meaning very few attempts, and they made just 30.2% of them. That pushes App State toward the paint, where rebounding and second chances come back into play.

If it stays close late, the free-throw line favors Merrimack. App State shot 64.2% at the stripe last season, 363rd of 365. Merrimack shot 78.8%, seventh in the country.

A rebuilt Merrimack

Joe Gallo, in his tenth season, has to replace almost everything that took Merrimack to its first MAAC regular-season title and a conference tournament final, where it lost to Siena 64-54. Players on this season's roster accounted for just 36.3% of last season's minutes. Kennedy, who averaged 18.4 points, is gone. Ernest Shelton, who averaged 15.9, is now at Boston College.

Dorset, who averaged 11.7 points, and forward Todd Brogna are the two returning full-time starters. Denver Anglin arrives from conference rival Iona after averaging 9.3 points there. He shot 29.9% from three, so he is a volume scorer more than an efficient one. Gallo also brought in Elijah Wilborn from James Madison and Aram Soqui Urbano from Fresno State.

Dustin Kerns, in his seventh season at App State, adds transfers KJ Vasser and Jaylen Colon. He also has a 7-foot-2 redshirt freshman center, Rrezon Elezaj, who came from UConn. A center that size could turn the rebounding edge into the game's biggest mismatch. No starting lineup has been announced for either team.

Last season's final adjusted ratings, which measure points per 100 possessions against the schedule played, ranked the two programs 188th and 197th. That suggests a close matchup before the rosters changed.
