Loyola (MD) Greyhounds vs Georgetown Hoyas prediction: Chol Machot and Georgetown's new size test thin Loyola Maryland
Both programs lost most of last season's minutes, but Georgetown reloaded with high-major transfers and a shot-blocker while Loyola rebuilds around reserves.
| Spread | Georgetown -27.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 153.5 |
- Georgetown's transfer-built roster should control the paint and pull away, with the margin hinging on whether Loyola's reworked perimeter group can hit threes.
- Chol Machot and Georgetown's bigs against a Loyola defense that let opponents make 56.5% of their twos last season, 347th nationally.
- Georgetown is favored by 26.5, up from 25 when our feed first saw it; the total sits at 152.5.
Two rebuilds, unequal parts
Both benches tonight are full of new faces. Georgetown returns just 31.0% of last season's minutes, and Loyola Maryland returns 31.9%. The difference is what each program brought in to replace them.
Ed Cooley restocked with high-major transfers: Vyctorius Miller from Oklahoma State, Jaland Lowe from Kentucky, Elmarko Jackson from Kansas, Josiah Parker from Florida Atlantic and Chol Machot from Charleston. They join Caleb Williams and Kayvaun Mulready. The early returns were loud. The Hoyas won exhibitions over Wake Forest 94-77 and George Washington 76-68, with Lowe scoring 19 against GW.
Loyola, in Josh Loeffler's third season, lost its top five scorers. That group included Braeden Speed, who averaged 15.3 points last season before leaving for Florida Atlantic, and Emmett Adair, now at George Mason. Last season's adjusted ratings (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) had Georgetown 87th in net efficiency and Loyola 325th. Those numbers describe rosters that mostly no longer exist, so treat them as a rough floor for the gap rather than a measure of it.
Where Georgetown should win it
The clearest mismatch is inside. Last season Loyola allowed opponents to make 56.5% of their two-point shots, 347th of 365. Most of that roster is gone, but a short rotation built from former reserves is unlikely to fix the paint overnight.
Georgetown arrives bigger. Its minutes-weighted average height is 79.0 inches against Loyola's 77.5. Machot blocked 2.5 shots per game at Charleston last season while shooting 59.2% from the floor.
The Hoyas' other big man is less certain. Vince Iwuchukwu was still seeking NCAA clearance for a fifth year as of Oct. 28, though he had been practicing. Georgetown's Nov. 1 release lists him on the roster without stating his eligibility. NJ Benson, a DePaul transfer, was last reported ineligible pending a court appeal. Neither status had been settled publicly by tipoff day.
Loyola's three-point lifeline
Loyola's path to staying close runs through the arc. Last season the Greyhounds took 47.0% of their shots from three, 32nd most in the country, and Loeffler's system should keep firing.
The question is who makes them. Troy Cicero Jr. is the most proven returner, a 38% three-point shooter off the bench last season. Maximo Ortega, a Wofford transfer, offers spacing in limited minutes. Loeffler also singled out UMKC transfer D'Andre Harrison as a newcomer who can make an impact. A cold night from deep against a longer Georgetown roster could get away from Loyola early.
Reading the number
Georgetown was -25 when our feed first saw the game and has moved to -26.5, a move toward Georgetown. The total has risen from 150 to 152.5.
Tempo offers a small hint for the total. Last season Loyola played at 68.6 possessions per 40 minutes and Georgetown at 66.4, both near the middle of Division I. In a lopsided game, though, the pace often depends on how deep into the bench Cooley goes once the lead is safe.
History sides with the Hoyas too. Georgetown leads the series 36-7, and the last meeting, in 2010-11, ended 99-75.
