Lipscomb Bisons vs SE Missouri St Redhawks prediction: Lipscomb's barrage of threes tests a rebuilt SEMO in Cape Girardeau

Lipscomb wants the game played behind the arc, SEMO's defense spent last season taking that shot away, and both teams are opening with largely new casts.

Quick take
  • Lipscomb tries to spread SEMO out with threes and ball movement; SEMO tries to force twos, get to the line and lean on Marqueas Bell.
  • Mateo Esmeraldo's playmaking will be tested by a SEMO defense whose opponents took threes on only 32.9% of shots last season, 348th nationally.
  • Lipscomb is a 2.5-point road favorite after our feed first showed SEMO +1. Lipscomb won 88-77 in Cape Girardeau last November.

The fight over the arc

Season openers rarely come with a clean stylistic clash, but this one does. Last season Lipscomb took 48.2% of its shots from three, the 26th-highest share in Division I, and made 36.2% of them (53rd). The Bisons also assisted on 62.7% of their made baskets, 15th in the country, so those threes came from passing rather than isolation.

Southeast Missouri State built its identity on taking that shot away. Opponents took threes on just 32.9% of their attempts against the Redhawks last season, 348th of 365, meaning almost nobody saw fewer threes. SEMO held opponents to a 47.8% effective field goal percentage (a shooting mark that counts threes 1.5 times), 46th nationally, and allowed 101.6 points per 100 possessions, 40th.

The catch is that both units were built by players who have mostly left. Treat last season's numbers as a description of each program's system, not a forecast of tonight's personnel.

Two rebuilds, not equally deep

SEMO returns only 25.1% of last season's minutes. Luke Almodovar, who led the Redhawks at 14.1 points per game, is now at Memphis, and starting guards BJ Ward and Braxton Stacker left for East Tennessee State and UNC Greensboro. Brad Korn, in his seventh season, brought in seven transfers and two freshmen.

The returners still carry weight. Marqueas Bell and Landren Blocker were named OVC Players to Watch, and the Redhawks were picked second in the league's preseason poll. Bell scored 22 in an 89-81 overtime exhibition win over Evansville in October, which counts for nothing in the standings but hints at who gets the ball.

Lipscomb returns 42.6% of its minutes and lost two of its best shooters: center Grant Asman (14.1 points per game) and Ross Candelino, now at Fresno State. The constant is point guard Mateo Esmeraldo, who averaged 6.7 assists with a 127.9 offensive rating last season. Oregon transfer Takai Simpkins adds a scorer who averaged 12.5 points with the Ducks.

The free throw line tilts home

If SEMO keeps Lipscomb off the arc, the Redhawks' best path to points runs through the stripe. They posted a free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) of 38.3% last season, 84th nationally. Lipscomb's defense rarely sent opponents there, allowing a 28.0% rate that ranked 37th.

The flip side is SEMO's foul trouble on defense: opponents shot free throws at a 44.9% rate, 353rd in Division I. Lipscomb barely tested that weakness last season, drawing free throws at a 25.7% rate that ranked 356th. If a new-look Bisons roster attacks the rim more, SEMO's physical style could cost it. SEMO also made just 69.6% of its free throws last season (273rd), a problem in a game the market expects to be close.

What the market is saying

Seven books quote Lipscomb as a 2.5-point favorite on the road, and the line has moved toward the Bisons since our feed first saw SEMO as a 1-point underdog. That drift backs the visitor despite SEMO's preseason billing and home floor. The total sits at 152.5, nearly unchanged from 153 when the game first appeared.

History supports the Lipscomb lean. The Bisons won 88-77 at the Show Me Center last November and 78-60 in Nashville in December 2024. Both teams played above-average tempo last season, with Lipscomb at 70.8 possessions per 40 minutes (44th), so a high total fits their habits. The teams play again Dec. 19 in Nashville.
