Lindenwood Lions vs TCU Horned Frogs prediction: Gavin Sykes debuts for TCU against a Lindenwood roster built from scratch

TCU's opener hinges on how fast a reloaded Frogs lineup overwhelms a Lindenwood team with one returning player and 14 newcomers.

Quick take
  • TCU's experienced core and deeper roster should control a first game in which Lindenwood's newcomers are still learning each other.
  • Watch Lindenwood's new guards against TCU's ball pressure; the Frogs forced turnovers at the 32nd-highest rate last season.
  • TCU is a 28.5-point favorite, and the total moved from 153.5 to 154.5; last season's adjusted net ratings ranked TCU 49th, Lindenwood 261st.

A reload in Fort Worth

Season openers usually reward the team that knows itself. TCU tips off tonight at Schollmaier Arena at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN+, and Jamie Dixon, in his 11th season, has far more continuity than his visitor. The Frogs return players who logged 50.7% of last season's minutes.

Xavier Edmonds is the centerpiece. The preseason All-Big 12 pick posted a 61.4% effective field goal percentage (a shooting mark that counts threes 1.5 times) last season. Brock Harding ran the offense at 5.5 assists per game.

The headline addition is Gavin Sykes, the Big West Freshman of the Year. He scored 19.4 points per game at Long Beach State and made 38.7% of his threes. In the exhibition win over Wyoming on Oct. 17, he came off the bench for 17 points. TCU still has to replace David Punch, last season's leading scorer at 14.1 points per game, who left for Texas.

Lindenwood starts over

Kyle Gerdeman's Lions are close to a blank slate. Malek Archie is the only returning player, surrounded by 14 newcomers, five of them freshmen. Several of last season's rotation players scattered to USC, UNLV and Louisiana.

The most proven arrival is Xavier Spencer, who scored 11.9 points per game at UMass Lowell. Lindenwood's one tune-up was a 75-71 exhibition loss at Southern Illinois, where Archie, Spencer and Mason each scored 14. That close result on a road floor is the best evidence of where this group stands. The Lions were picked sixth in the OVC, and this is their first season of NCAA postseason eligibility.

Why last season's numbers mislead

Lindenwood's old profile reads well at first glance. Its raw defensive efficiency ranked 20th nationally last season. Adjusted for the opponents it faced, though, that defense ranked only 168th, a reminder of how soft the schedule behind it was. And with nearly the whole roster gone, even the adjusted figures describe a different team.

TCU's identity is more likely to carry over because the returners carry it. The Frogs forced turnovers on 20.5% of opponent possessions last season, a rate that ranked 32nd. A new Lindenwood backcourt playing its first real game together, on the road against a Big 12 roster, is a natural target for that pressure. Texas Tech transfer Luke Bamgboye, who blocked 1.7 shots per game there, adds a shot-blocker behind it.

Reading a 28.5-point line

The market treats this as a mismatch. TCU is favored by 28.5, unchanged since our feed first saw the game, and nine books quote it. The gap in last season's adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions scored minus allowed, adjusted for opponents) explains why: TCU ranked 49th and Lindenwood 261st.

The total has drifted up a point to 154.5. Tempo is the hard part to read. Last season's Lindenwood played at the ninth-fastest pace in the country, but the players who set that pace are gone. Whether Gerdeman's new group pushes the ball the same way, or TCU slows the game, is something nobody will know until the opening minutes.

  • Turnovers early: whether TCU's pressure produces runs of easy points before Lindenwood settles
  • Sykes' role: starter or sixth man, and how much of Punch's scoring he absorbs
  • Lindenwood's pace: an early sign of how many possessions this game holds
