Incarnate Word Cardinals vs Oklahoma St Cowboys prediction: Kanye Clary's groin hangs over Oklahoma State's opener against rebuilt UIW

The Cowboys are heavy favorites, but a rebuilt backcourt still sorting out its health and a perimeter defense that leaked in October leave room for a cover question.

Quick take
  • Oklahoma State's size and pace should overwhelm a UIW roster that returns almost nothing. The margin depends on which Cowboys guards are healthy tonight.
  • Julius Halaifonua inside against a UIW defense that allowed 53.9% on twos last season, 294th nationally.
  • Oklahoma State opened at -29.5 in our feed and now sits at -27.5. The Cowboys allowed 36.0% from three last season, 320th.

A backcourt held together

Steve Lutz begins his third season at Oklahoma State with a rebuilt roster, a rough October and a point guard question that may not be settled until warmups. Incarnate Word has a bigger unknown. Almost nobody on its roster played meaningful minutes for the Cardinals last season. The spread is huge. The real question tonight is who will be on the floor to cover it.

Kanye Clary, the returning starter at point guard, hurt his groin between exhibitions and missed the last two. On Oct. 30 Lutz called him day-to-day and a game-time decision, and he has said being cleared "doesn't mean that he's gonna start." Clary averaged 4.6 assists last season. If he sits, Kashie Natt likely runs the point with freshman Anthony Felisi at shooting guard, and Jacob Walker picked up extra point guard minutes while Clary was out.

The list of absences is longer than Clary. Luka Bogavac and Jordan Burks both missed multiple exhibitions, though Lutz said Oct. 29 he was hopeful Bogavac would be available tonight. Parsa Fallah, who tore his left ACL in February, didn't appear in October, and the latest outlook points to a return sometime before the end of the calendar year. Mekhi Ragland also sat out the exhibitions. Fallah and Natt are both playing under temporary court injunctions on eligibility.

Incarnate Word starts from zero

The Cardinals bring back just 0.5% of last season's minutes, so last season's 12-19 team tells you very little. The scorers are gone: Davion Bailey, Tahj Staveskie (now at Akron) and Jordan Pyke (now at Arkansas State). The roster is built from transfers, and the Cardinals were picked near the bottom of the Southland.

Ismail Habib arrives from Southern Indiana as the likely go-to scorer after averaging 14.7 points there. Mekhi Conner, from Sacred Heart, is a true distributor, but he made only 27.6% of his threes. That matters because last season's Cardinals won with shooting, at 37.7% from three, 22nd nationally. The players who made those shots left.

The leak behind the arc

Oklahoma State's weakness carried over from last season into October. The Cowboys allowed opponents to shoot 36.0% from three last season, 320th of 365. Across three exhibitions, two of them losses, opponents made 43 of 100 attempts. The last was an 82-65 defeat at Wisconsin on Oct. 27.

That gives UIW a path to keeping the score respectable, even with its shooters gone. Brandon McCreesh, a Bucknell transfer, shot 37.5% from deep in a short stint there. If the Cardinals get hot early against an Oklahoma State perimeter defense still learning to play together, 27.5 points is a lot to cover.

Size and the free throw line

The cleaner edge for Oklahoma State is inside. The Cowboys' minutes-weighted average height is 78.2 inches, against 73.7 for UIW. Last season the Cardinals allowed 53.9% on two-pointers and blocked shots at one of the lowest rates in the country.

That sets up Julius Halaifonua, the projected starting center from Georgetown, who posted an effective field goal percentage (threes count 1.5 times) of 62.4 last season. Fouls are the other lever. Oklahoma State's free throw rate (free throw attempts per field goal attempt) ranked 68th last season, and UIW's defense sent opponents to the line at a rate that ranked 308th. Expect the Cowboys to attack the rim, especially if their guard rotation is thin.

Tempo and a big number

Last season Oklahoma State played at 73.4 possessions per 40 minutes, eighth-fastest in the country, and gave up a lot of points along the way. UIW played at a deliberate 65.9, 275th. In a home opener, expect Lutz's preferred pace to win out.

The total of 159.5 hasn't moved since our feed first recorded this game. The spread has. Oklahoma State first showed at -29.5 and is now -27.5, so the movement has gone toward Incarnate Word. That fits the injury news and the October exhibition results.

  • Whether Clary starts, plays off the bench or sits
  • UIW's three-point volume in the first ten minutes
  • Halaifonua's foul count against a smaller front line
