Idaho State Bengals vs Utah State Aggies prediction: Idaho State returns almost nothing as Jacobson debuts at Utah State

Two rebuilt rosters open the season in Logan, but only one rebuilt with proven transfers and a sold-out building behind it.

Quick take
  • Utah State's transfer-heavy roster should control a Bengals team rebuilt almost from scratch; the real question is the margin, not the winner.
  • Mason Falslev, day-to-day with a lower-body injury as of Oct. 30, against an Idaho State backcourt with no shared game experience.
  • Utah State is -26, down from -27, and the total rose from 145 to 148.5; Idaho State returns 3.6% of last season's minutes.

A program reset to zero

Ryan Looney's roster turnover is about as complete as college basketball gets. Players on this season's Idaho State roster accounted for just 3.6% of last season's minutes. Twelve of 15 players left in the spring. Even the count of returners is muddied: an April release named three, while a late-October preview put it at two.

The Bengals lost leading scorer Connor Hollenbeck, who averaged 13.2 points last season, plus starting guards Martin Kheil, now at Iona, and Lachlan Brewer, and point guard Jamison Guerra. That makes last season's 13-20 team a weak guide to this one. The only thread worth noting is the defense Looney has to rebuild, which finished last season 319th nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents). Big Sky coaches and media picked Idaho State ninth. The Bengals beat Montana Western in an exhibition, and that is the entire public record of this group.

Jacobson's imported backcourt

Utah State turned over plenty too, just with more talent arriving. Ben Jacobson coaches his first game in Logan, the Aggies begin their first Pac-12 season, and the roster holds four returners and 11 newcomers, most of them transfers. Those returners played 25.5% of last season's minutes for a team that went 29-7.

The imports bring track records. Solomon Callaghan shot 39.5% from three at Wright State. Will Hornseth made 60.1% of his shots at Northern Iowa. Dallin Hall, a late addition from Virginia, and AJ Bates from Louisiana Tech both ran offenses last season. Connor Turnbull, a 6-11 fifth-year who missed most of last season with an elbow injury, played in the Oct. 10 exhibition and gives the Aggies a shot-blocker at the rim.

The preseason results were loud. Utah State scored at least 86 points in each of three exhibition wins, including a 101-79 rout of Santa Clara.

Falslev and the injury list

The returner who matters most is Mason Falslev, who averaged 16.0 points last season. He has a lower-body injury, missed an exhibition against Saint Mary's and was called day-to-day. As of Oct. 30 he was uncertain to play, and Utah State hasn't said whether he's cleared for tonight.

He isn't the only question. As of Oct. 10, Bron Roberts was still recovering from ACL surgery, Collin Mulholland was working back from a sprained ankle, and freshman guard Jax Allen hadn't dressed while the school reviewed his eligibility.

Utah State's defense last season forced turnovers on 20.5% of opponent possessions, 33rd in the country, and Falslev averaged 1.9 steals. Pressure like that is built for a backcourt that has never played a real game together. Without him, the Aggies lean harder on transfers still learning each other.

What the 26-point line says

Utah State is a 26-point home favorite, with a moneyline that leaves little doubt about the winner. The spread has slipped a point from -27 when our feed first recorded it, and the total has climbed from 145 to 148.5. Money has drifted toward Idaho State on the side and toward more scoring overall.

That fits the uncertainty. Neither team's tempo from last season means much with rosters this new, and a Falslev absence would trim Utah State's ceiling. The setting still favors the hosts: season tickets are sold out, and this opens a run of five straight home games.
