Howard Bison vs Yale Bulldogs prediction: Yale's reloaded backcourt opens against Howard's veteran, foul-drawing core

Yale brings back less than two-fifths of last season's minutes, and Howard arrives with most of an NCAA tournament roster and a game built to test a rebuilt frontcourt.

Quick take
  • Yale leans on returning guards to shoot over Howard's pressure while the Bison try to win at the foul line and on the offensive glass.
  • Howard's free throw rate ranked 7th last season; Yale's defense allowed the 10th-lowest opponent rate. Whichever holds decides how many cheap points Howard gets.
  • Yale is a 6-point favorite, up from -5 when our feed first saw it. Howard returns 64.9% of its minutes to Yale's 36.8%.

Two programs, two summers

Yale has beaten Howard three straight times, most recently 87-81 in overtime at Howard last February. The team that takes the floor in New Haven tonight looks little like that one. Nick Townsend left for Stanford, Isaac Celiscar for Baylor and Samson Aletan for Providence, and Casey Simmons is gone too. Yale returns just 36.8% of last season's minutes, and James Jones folds six newcomers into the roster.

Howard went the other way. The Bison return 64.9% of their minutes from a team that won a First Four game over UMBC before Michigan ended its season, and the MEAC picked them to repeat as champions. Their biggest loss is Bryce Harris, who averaged 17.3 points last season. Cedric Taylor III, who scored 17.0 a game across 24 appearances, is back to absorb those shots.

So last season's team numbers describe Howard far better than they describe Yale. For the Bulldogs, the guards are the guide.

Yale's guards carry the load

What Yale kept is shooting. Last season the Bulldogs made 39.6% of their threes, 2nd in the country, and the returners were a big part of it. Jordan Brathwaite hit 44.1% off the bench, and captain Trevor Mullin made 38.2% while shooting 89.3% at the line.

"The back court's really good, we have four guards but can only play three at a time, which is a good problem to have," Jones said last week. The Bulldogs looked sharp in a preseason tune-up against Rutgers.

Howard's perimeter defense is the test. Opponents shot 30.9% from three against the Bison last season, 36th nationally. Riley Fox, who used 26.6% of Yale's possessions when on the floor, gives Jones a forward who can shoot as well. If Howard's veteran guards chase Yale off the line, the Bulldogs have to score inside without the frontcourt that carried them.

The free throw line

This is the clash that may decide the game's shape. Howard lived at the line last season: its free throw rate, free throw attempts per field goal attempt, was 44.2%, 7th in Division I. Yale's defense almost never sent opponents there, allowing a 25.4% rate that ranked 10th.

The catch for Yale is that the players who protected the paint are the ones who left. The question is whether that discipline survives a new frontcourt facing Taylor's drives.

The other side of the ledger favors Yale. Howard's defense fouled a lot, with an opponent free throw rate that ranked 319th. Yale's returning guards convert at the line, which matters in a series that went to overtime last time.

Turnovers and the offensive glass

Howard's defense creates extra possessions. The Bison forced turnovers on 21.2% of opponent possessions last season, 12th in the country, and Cam Gillus averaged 1.8 steals. Yale's offense protected the ball, with a turnover rate of 14.0% that ranked 19th, though that was a different set of ball handlers.

Howard gave some back. Its own turnover rate ranked 317th, a weakness Yale, which ranked 203rd in forcing turnovers, wasn't built to punish. The Bison made up for it on the boards, grabbing 36.4% of their misses, 28th nationally. Fresno State transfer Gasper Kocevar adds size in the middle for a team that will try to win those second chances against Yale's new frontcourt.

What the market sees

Yale is a 6-point favorite with a total of 152.5, both up a point from the first line our feed recorded. The moneyline sits at Yale -270 and Howard +217.5.

The pace numbers frame the total. Howard played at 69.4 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 92nd in the country, while Yale's 65.6 ranked 286th. The last two meetings both cleared this number. Tonight's version swaps out much of Yale's scoring, and the opener tends to reveal which team's identity travels into a new season.
