Gardner-Webb Bulldogs vs UConn Huskies prediction: UConn opens a rebuilt era, and the 38.5-point spread runs into a slow tempo

Gardner-Webb had the worst defense in Division I last season, but UConn's deliberate pace makes covering a near-40-point number harder than the talent gap suggests.

Quick take
  • UConn should control this from the opening minutes. The real question is whether a slow-paced Husky offense piles up enough possessions to win by 41.
  • Watch UConn's offensive rebounding against a Gardner-Webb front line that ranked 353rd in defensive rebound rate last season.
  • UConn is favored by 41, and the line has moved from 38.5 to 41 since our feed first saw it. UConn played at the 353rd-fastest pace last season, which caps the margin.

The spread runs into the pace

No. 4 UConn tips off its season tonight at 9 p.m. ET in Hartford as a 41-point favorite. No sane reader expects Gardner-Webb to win. The question is whether Dan Hurley's team plays fast enough to bury a team by 41, because the Huskies don't usually run.

Last season UConn averaged 63.5 possessions per 40 minutes, which ranked 353rd of 365 teams. Gardner-Webb played closer to the middle of the country at 68.5, 139th. Fewer possessions mean fewer chances to stretch a lead, and a favorite this heavy often empties its bench early.

The market has moved on the side: the line has moved from UConn -38.5 to UConn -41. The total has not moved, holding at 147.5. The game is at PeoplesBank Arena rather than on campus, with Gampel Pavilion under renovation.

A new UConn takes the floor

This is a different Husky roster. Alex Karaban and Tarris Reed Jr. both went in the first round of the NBA Draft. Solo Ball is out for the season with a medical redshirt after wrist surgery. UConn returns 47.3% of last season's minutes, and transfers fill the gaps.

The projected lineup is Silas Demary Jr., Braylon Mullins, Jayden Ross, Nik Khamenia and Na'jai Hines. Demary, the preseason Big East Player of the Year, ran the offense last season with 5.9 assists per game. Hines replaces Reed's rim protection. He blocked 2.2 shots per game at Seton Hall in a reserve role. Off the bench, Wofford transfer Nils Machowski brings a scorer's resume: 17.2 points per game on 38.2% from three last season.

The preseason suggests the pieces fit. UConn beat Syracuse 72-52 in an exhibition and also handled Michigan State and Purdue, wire to wire in all three.

Where the margin gets built

If UConn covers, it will probably be through extra possessions rather than extra pace. Last season the Huskies grabbed 35.7% of their own misses (offensive rebound rate), 40th nationally. Gardner-Webb's defensive rebound rate of 64.8% ranked 353rd, so second chances should be there all night.

The Bulldogs also gave the ball away often. Their turnover rate of 19.9 per 100 possessions ranked 343rd last season. Live-ball turnovers are one way UConn's half-court team can find easy transition points.

Inside, Gardner-Webb's opponents made 58.7% of their two-point shots, 364th of 365. Against Hines, Khamenia and a deep guard rotation, the paint looks wide open unless the new Bulldog roster defends very differently.

Gardner-Webb starts over again

Jeremy Luther enters his third season after a 4-29 finish. His defense allowed 124.4 points per 100 possessions, last among 365 Division I teams. That figure comes with a large caveat. Only 32.4% of last season's minutes return, so last season's numbers describe a different team.

Jacob Hudson is the lone returner from the Bulldogs' top six. He averaged 10.7 points and 4.0 rebounds, and his 22% usage made him a primary option. Ace Talbert and Jamias Ferere are also back, and transfers from Vermont and Buffalo join them. Gardner-Webb was picked ninth in the Big South.

The last two meetings between these programs came in November 2007, and UConn won both. History and talent point one way. The only open question is the size of the score.
