Florida Gulf Coast Eagles vs UCF Knights prediction: Isaiah Malone turns on the FGCU program he once anchored
Two rosters rebuilt almost from scratch open in Orlando, and the best-known defender on the floor spent last season wearing the other team's jersey.
| Spread | UCF -22.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 153.5 |
- UCF's transfer-built rotation brings more proven scoring and size than an FGCU roster that returns 19.4% of last season's minutes.
- Isaiah Malone, last season's ASUN Defensive Player of the Year at FGCU, against new Eagles guards like Houston Christian transfer Elijah Brooks.
- UCF is favored by 21.75, down from 22, while the total rose from 151.5 to 153.5 as of Sunday.
Malone faces his old team
Season openers between in-state programs rarely come with this kind of plot twist. Isaiah Malone spent last season protecting FGCU's rim and was named ASUN Defensive Player of the Year for it. Tonight at 7 p.m. ET he suits up for UCF against the Eagles, and the Knights are leaning on him as one of the anchors of a remade roster.
Malone averaged 10.5 points and 1.9 blocks for FGCU last season while posting a 61.8% effective field goal percentage (a shooting mark that counts threes as 1.5 makes). He knows the sets Pat Chambers runs, and Chambers, now in his fifth year, has to rebuild without him. The Eagles also lost guards Rahmir Barno and Jordan Ellerbee and bring back only 19.4% of last season's minutes.
Two rosters built from scratch
UCF is barely more familiar with itself. The Knights return 17.8% of last season's minutes and open without three of their top four scorers. Johnny Dawkins, in his 10th season and fresh off a three-year extension signed in May, restocked through the portal.
The headliner is Dior Johnson, back for a second stint after scoring 24.0 points per game at Tarleton State on a 37.9% usage rate (the share of possessions he finished while on the floor). North Carolina A&T transfer Lewis Walker adds 18.9 points a game of production from last season. The point guard job was still an open competition at media day. Riley Kugel is the wild card: around Oct. 26, Dawkins said Kugel was able to compete now, though his longer-term status is uncertain.
FGCU's school release names Chase Konieczny as the player leading the Eagles in. Brooks scored 12.2 points a game in eight games at Houston Christian, and Darren Williams, the top returner, shot 35.7% from three. None of the returners were regular starters last season, so the Eagles' first rotation is a genuine unknown.
Size in the paint
UCF should own the inside. Weighted by minutes, the Knights' roster averages 79.5 inches to FGCU's 77.7. John Bol, who re-signed for a second season, shot 71.7% from the field last season, almost entirely around the basket. New Orleans transfer Churchill Abass blocked 1.7 shots a game, and Malone gives the Knights a third rim protector.
FGCU's answer is Penn State transfer Justin Houser, the program's first 7-footer, on a team the school calls one of the tallest in its history. Houser played sparingly in State College, so how much he can handle against this frontcourt is an open question.
What the market is pricing
The line has barely budged: UCF opened at -22 in our feed and sits at -21.75, a slight move toward the Eagles. The total climbed to 153.5. Last season UCF ranked 76th in pace while FGCU ranked 250th, but with this much turnover those tempo marks are a loose guide at best.
The same caution applies to last season's final ratings, where UCF finished 58th in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) and FGCU finished 243rd. Neither team plays like last year's version anymore. The Big 12 coaches projected UCF 13th of 16, yet that still puts the Knights a clear tier above an ASUN rebuild. The all-time series is 1-1, with UCF winning last season.
