Florida A&M Rattlers vs Florida St Seminoles prediction: Charlie Ward's Rattlers test a brand-new Florida State and a steep spread

Florida State brings back almost none of last season's minutes, and the market still expects a rout of Ward's turnover-prone Florida A&M.

Quick take
  • Florida State's transfer-heavy roster should overwhelm FAMU, but nobody has seen this group play a real game together.
  • Watch FAMU's guards against Florida State's pressure. The Rattlers turned it over more than almost anyone last season.
  • Florida State moved from -24.75 to -28.5. FAMU's turnover rate last season ranked 364th of 365.

Ward faces his alma mater

Charlie Ward won the 1993 Heisman Trophy as Florida State's quarterback. Tonight he coaches Florida A&M against the Seminoles in the Orion180 Tip-Off Classic in Tampa (8:30 PM ET, ESPNU), the opener of Florida State's 80th season. It is the first regular-season meeting between the crosstown programs since the 1991 Capitol City Classic, which ended in a forfeit after a fight.

The last time they shared a floor, in an exhibition last season, Florida State won 88-54. Ward's program has grown since then. The Rattlers went 15-16 last season, their most wins since 2007-08, and tied for second in the SWAC. The league's preseason poll picked them fourth.

A Florida State built from scratch

Florida State returns just 6.3% of last season's minutes. Luke Loucks, in his second season after replacing Leonard Hamilton, brought in 12 newcomers: six transfers and six freshmen. Alex Steen is the only rotation player back. AJ Swinton, still recovering from an ACL tear, was suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules on Oct. 30. Loucks said he is "separate from the team right now."

The scoring now runs through transfers. Kam Taylor averaged 18.9 points at UNC Asheville last season. Sebastian Rancik scored 12.3 a game at Colorado. Anthony Robinson II comes from Missouri, Cooper Schwieger from Wake Forest. The Seminoles beat Auburn and LSU in preseason scrimmages and appear to enter the season relatively healthy.

Loucks' style is the piece most likely to carry over. Last season his team played at 71 possessions per 40 minutes, 39th-fastest of 365. It took 50.6% of its shots from three, 14th-most in Division I, but made only 33.1% of them. Volume without accuracy can still bury an overmatched opponent, or it can keep a big favorite within reach.

The turnover battle FAMU must survive

FAMU's biggest problem last season was holding on to the ball. The Rattlers turned it over on 23.1% of possessions, 364th of 365. Florida State forced turnovers at a 19.2% rate, 66th nationally.

FAMU returns 28.2% of last season's minutes, so those team numbers are a loose guide. The guards who are back handled plenty of the ball. Jaquan Sanders played 31.8 minutes a game last season and averaged 3.6 assists. Antonio Baker Jr. played 27.0 minutes a game last season and made 83.8% of his free throws. UAlbany transfer Jaden Kempson adds a third ball handler.

The Rattlers can also take the ball away. Last season they forced turnovers on 20.9% of possessions, 20th nationally. A rebuilt Florida State backcourt playing its first real game is the kind of group that pressure can rattle early.

Where the number sits

Florida State was -24.75 when our feed first saw this game and now sits at -28.5 across eight books. The total climbed from 156.75 to 158.5. That is a lot of faith in a roster with no real games together.

Last season's adjusted ratings (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) explain the faith: Florida State finished 67th in adjusted net efficiency, FAMU 320th. Tempo is the catch. FAMU played at 65.3 possessions per 40 minutes last season, 295th. If the Rattlers slow this down and limit giveaways, a margin this wide and a total this high both get harder to reach.
