Fairleigh Dickinson Knights vs Illinois Fighting Illini prediction: Illinois starts its Final Four encore without All-American David Mirkovic
The No. 3 Illini open as a 37.5-point favorite, and the questions are about their frontcourt and a rebuilt FDU roster rather than who wins.
| Spread | Illinois -39.75 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 156.5 |
- Illinois should control a slow, half-court game, with its bigger rotation and second-chance points doing the damage even without Mirkovic.
- Watch Illinois' offensive rebounding against an FDU frontcourt that lost Taeshaud Jackson and his 8.4 rebounds per game.
- Illinois is a 39.5-point favourite, the same number our feed first recorded; both teams ranked among the nation's slowest last season.
Mirkovic sits again
Illinois reached its first Final Four since 2005 last spring, and it opens the follow-up without its best returning player. David Mirkovic, an AP preseason All-America first-teamer, had an emergency appendectomy Saturday night, and Brad Underwood said Sunday he will not play Monday. It is his second setback of the fall. He fractured his left foot over the summer, needed surgery, and was back in a walking boot in late October. Illinois has given no return timetable.
That removes a forward who averaged 13.3 points and 8.0 rebounds last season. The good news arrived the same day: Andrej Stojakovic and Zvonimir Ivisic, both hurt in the Oct. 23 Baylor exhibition, will be active, and a pregame listing shows Tomislav Ivisic (knee) and Stojakovic (head) expected to play. Stojakovic could slide to the four if Underwood goes small. Freshman guard Lincoln Williams is questionable, and Underwood hasn't said whether he plays.
An elite offense, reshuffled
Last season Illinois finished 1st of 365 in adjusted offensive efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) at 133.4. Keaton Wagler and his 17.9 points per game left for the NBA draft, and Kylan Boswell graduated, yet 57.3% of last season's minutes are back.
The new piece is Providence transfer Stefan Vaaks, projected as a starter after averaging 15.8 points there last season. Stojakovic scored 13.5 a game last season, mostly inside the arc. Jake Davis is the specialist to track: he shot 40.6% from three last season in a bench role, and a small-ball lineup without Mirkovic should give him more run.
FDU is almost a new team
Fairleigh Dickinson went 11-21 last season and finished 331st in adjusted net efficiency, and little of that team is left. Only 25.2% of last season's minutes return, so those team numbers say more about who left than about who will play Monday. Jack Castleberry has 10 newcomers, seven of them transfers.
The constant is sophomore guard David Jevtic, the reigning NEC Rookie of the Year, who averaged 6.6 points last season. The scoring has to come from new faces: graduate transfer JR Jacobs, a 5-foot-11 guard, averaged 13.4 points at Georgia Southwestern State, and Pepperdine transfer Pavle Stosic gives the Knights a forward with Division I starts.
The glass decides the margin
Illinois' most reliable weapon last season was the second shot. It grabbed 39.3% of its own misses (offensive rebound rate), 3rd in the country. FDU's defensive rebounding was a real strength at 74.0%, 28th nationally, but the players who produced it are mostly gone, including Jackson and starting center Cyril Martynov.
Mirkovic's absence trims Illinois' size, but the Ivisics against Stosic's FDU frontcourt is still a mismatch on length. If the Illini keep winning their own misses, a lopsided score follows even on a cold shooting night.
A big number, few possessions
A big number, few possessions This is a large spread to cover in a slow game. Illinois ranked 359th in pace last season and FDU 336th, so neither side wants to run. That puts pressure on per-possession efficiency rather than volume to build a margin.
The spread hasn't moved from our feed's first reading: Illinois was -39.5 when our feed first recorded the game and sits at -39.5 now, while the total has risen from 152.5 to 156.5. Illinois also forced few turnovers last season, ranking 365th in forced turnover rate, so the Knights' new guards shouldn't face much pressure. The margin will have to come from shooting and rebounding.

Numbers that matter
| Illinois offensive rebound rate | 39.3% | Third in the nation last season and the most likely source of a big margin tonight. |
|---|---|---|
| FDU returning minutes | 25.2% | So little of last season's roster is back that last season's FDU team numbers are a weak guide. |
| Illinois adjusted offense rank | 1st | Last season's final rating, with Vaaks replacing Wagler's scoring this season. |
| Current spread | -37.5 | Down from -39.5 when our feed first saw the game, a small move toward FDU. |
| Illinois pace rank | 359th | A slow team last season, which makes a huge margin harder to reach. |
