Elon Phoenix vs Columbia Lions prediction: Columbia's rebounding returners test a rebuilt Elon in Lions' home opener
The Lions bring back most of the frontcourt that owned the glass last season, while Elon tips off with 10 scholarship newcomers and a defense that couldn't finish possessions.
| Spread | Columbia -4.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 153.5 |
- Expect Columbia to grind out second chances against a remade Elon front line, with the Phoenix leaning on returning guards and transfer shooting.
- Columbia's offensive rebounding against Elon's defensive glass: 13th nationally versus 304th last season, the widest gap between these teams.
- Columbia is a 3.5-point favorite after our feed first saw -3. Elon returns only 27.9% of last season's minutes.
Second chances decide it
Columbia opens at home tonight for the first time since 2015-16, and the most useful thing it brings to Levien Gymnasium is a habit. The Lions crashed the offensive glass relentlessly last season, rebounding 37.5% of their own misses, 13th in Division I. They also finished defensive possessions well, ranking 27th in defensive rebound rate.
Elon was on the other end of that skill. The Phoenix secured 67.2% of opponents' misses last season, 304th nationally, which helps explain a defense that ranked 305th in adjusted efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents).
Roster churn muddies last season's numbers, but here it cuts Columbia's way. The Lions' frontcourt returners are back: Connor Igoe pulled down 5.6 rebounds a game and Mason Ritter started every game he played. Elon's best interior producers from last season are gone, so the Phoenix are asking new bodies to win a battle they lost a year ago.
Elon starts nearly from scratch
Billy Taylor's roster carries 10 scholarship newcomers, and Elon returns just 27.9% of last season's minutes. Chandler Cuthrell, who scored 19.8 points a game, is not on the roster. CAA coaches picked the Phoenix eighth of 13.
The constants are two guards. Bryson Cokley shot 39.2% from three last season with an offensive rating of 122.1, and Randall Pettus II started 31 games. Around them, Charlotte transfer Raul Villar is expected to run the point, East Carolina transfer Isaiah Mbeng was once an All-CAA rookie at William & Mary, and Cam Thrower made 41.9% of his threes at Penn.
Columbia has its own hole to fill. Kenny Noland, its leading scorer last season, left for Michigan. But the Lions return 55.9% of their minutes under second-year coach Kevin Hovde, and familiarity tends to matter most on opening night.
Columbia's giveaway problem
The Lions' weakness last season was ball security: they turned it over on 19.3% of possessions, 331st in the country. That is the clearest path for an underdog to steal extra shots.
Elon's defense didn't exploit that kind of opponent often. Its forced turnover rate ranked in the middle of Division I last season, and its steal rate did too. If Columbia keeps its giveaways near average, the rebounding edge should hold.
The perimeter is the other opening. Elon let opponents shoot 35.9% from three last season, 318th nationally, and Gerard O'Keefe is the Columbia returner most likely to punish that. He made 42.9% of his threes last season. At the line, Columbia ranked 299th in free-throw percentage, a detail that matters if this ends close.
A short line and a tight history
The market leans home but not hard. Columbia sits at -3.5, up from -3 when our feed first recorded the game, with the move toward the Lions. The total has barely budged, at 151.25 from 151.5.
History argues for keeping the spread in view. Elon leads the series 3-1 and won both previous trips to Columbia by a single point each.
- Columbia's offensive rebounding against Elon's unproven frontcourt
- Whether the Lions' turnovers hand Elon extra possessions
- How quickly Villar and the transfer guards mesh with Cokley and Pettus
