Eastern Michigan Eagles vs Coastal Carolina Chanticleers prediction: Coastal Carolina rebuilt nearly everything, and the line still drifted its way

Two remade rosters open the MAC-SBC Challenge in Conway, and the real question is how much of Coastal's stingy defense from last season walked out the door.

Quick take
  • Expect a feel-out opener between new rosters at a similar tempo, decided by whichever team's transfers find shots first.
  • Eastern Michigan's Mohammad Habhab, a 36-minute workhorse last season, against a Coastal frontcourt that is almost entirely new.
  • Coastal opened as a 1-point underdog in our feed and now lays 1; only 20.7% of its minutes return.

Two teams built in one summer

Opening night usually rewards the team that knows itself. Tonight in Conway, neither team quite does. Coastal Carolina returns just 20.7% of last season's minutes, and only three players come back: DaJohn Craig, Derrick Green and Tristan Thompson, all of them bench players a year ago. Justin Gray, in his third season, added seven transfers and four freshmen to a program coming off a 19-13 year, its first winning season in four years.

Eastern Michigan has more continuity, though not much. The Eagles bring back 34.4% of their minutes under first-year coach Billy Donlon, who makes his regular-season debut after an 87-62 exhibition loss to defending national champion Michigan. EMU was picked ninth in the MAC. Carlos Hart, who started 18 games last season, is listed among the team's departures, and his status after a January point-shaving indictment is unconfirmed.

The teams last played at the 1991 Great Alaska Shootout, an EMU win. The game tips at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

The defense that may not exist anymore

Last season Coastal won with defense. Its opponents posted an effective field goal percentage (a shooting mark that counts threes 1.5 times) of 45.9%, 12th-best of 365. Inside the arc it was even better: opponents made 44.7% of twos, seventh nationally.

That defense did its work without gambling. Coastal ranked 364th in forced turnover rate and 362nd in steal rate, so it won by contesting shots and finishing possessions on the glass. That matters tonight because EMU's guards will not be pressured into mistakes. The open question is whether a nearly new roster can recreate the contesting. Last season's team numbers describe players who are mostly gone, and they deserve only modest weight.

Coastal's offense was the weak spot. Its effective field goal percentage ranked 322nd, and its three leading scorers have all left, two of them for Rutgers and South Florida.

Where the shots come from

The style split from last season is sharp. Coastal took threes on 43.2% of its shots, while Eastern Michigan's 31.9% ranked 333rd, among the lowest rates in the country. Both played at nearly identical tempos, so possessions should not be the battleground.

EMU's best shooter is a returner. Gregory Lawson II hit 43.2% of 88 threes off the bench last season, and more minutes for him would push the Eagles toward a more balanced shot mix. Habhab is the engine, but an inefficient one: he played 36.0 minutes a night and scored 14.2 points on a 41.3% effective field goal rate. Jabri Fitzpatrick, who averaged 15.0 points at New Haven, gives Donlon a second high-usage creator.

Coastal's shooting will come from new faces and one familiar one. Craig made 37% of 92 threes last season. Trey Perry, one of the two transfers the school has highlighted as emerging leaders, was ruthlessly efficient in a small role at Miami (Ohio), posting a 59.5% effective field goal rate.

A line that flipped sides

When our feed first saw this game, Eastern Michigan was the 1-point favorite. Coastal now lays 1, with the moneyline at -115 for the home side, and the total has slipped from 143 to 141.75.

The flip is interesting given the baseline. By last season's final adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions scored minus allowed, adjusted for opponents), EMU ranked 235th and Coastal 252nd, despite the Eagles' 10-21 record. The market appears to be paying for home floor and a promising transfer haul over last season's ratings. The dip in the total fits Coastal's defensive history and two offenses that ranked 294th (EMU) and 300th (Coastal) nationally in adjusted efficiency last season.

No injury news has surfaced for either side heading into tip.
