Eastern Illinois Panthers vs Indiana Hoosiers prediction: Indiana's transfer-built lineup debuts against an Eastern Illinois team starting over
Both rosters were rebuilt from almost nothing, but Indiana imported proven high-major starters while Eastern Illinois lost its entire starting five.
| Spread | Indiana -34.5 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 144.5 |
- Indiana's imported front line should control the paint against an Eastern Illinois roster that lost all five starters from a 13-20 team.
- Markus Burton against Eastern Illinois' ball pressure: the Panthers forced turnovers on 19.9% of possessions last season, 46th nationally.
- Indiana is favored by 34.5, unchanged since first seen; the total slipped to 142.5, and both teams played slowly last season.
Two rosters starting over
Darian DeVries opens his second season at Indiana with a starting five that never played a minute for the Hoosiers before this fall. Eastern Illinois is just as new: the Panthers lost all five starters from a 13-20 team. Monday night in Bloomington is the first real look at both rebuilds, and the market thinks one is much further along.
Indiana returns just 17.2% of last season's minutes. The Hoosiers used the same starters in all three exhibitions: Markus Burton (Notre Dame), Darren Harris (Duke), Jaeden Mustaf (Georgia Tech), Aiden Sherrell (Alabama) and Samet Yigitoglu (SMU). Bryce Lindsay, a Villanova starter last season, is set to come off the bench as the sixth man. Sam Alexis, the most productive returner, is ineligible for 2026-27 after an Aug. 26 court order ended his injunction-based eligibility.
Eastern Illinois brings back 10.1% of its minutes. Markus Blackwell, JT Elder and Andrew Austin are the only returning letterwinners, and Zion Fruster, who led the Panthers at 14.5 points a game last season, is gone. Last season's team numbers are a rough guide for both sides. For what they're worth, Indiana finished 36th in adjusted net efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents) and Eastern Illinois finished 320th.
Size inside for Indiana
Indiana's minutes-weighted average height is 79.2 inches, and the new frontcourt is built to finish. Yigitoglu shot 63% from the field at SMU last season. Sherrell blocked 2.2 shots a game at Alabama and posted a 59.5% effective field goal percentage, a measure that counts threes as 1.5 field goals.
That is where Eastern Illinois was most exposed last season. The Panthers' own 2-point shooting ranked 342nd nationally, and they ranked 322nd in defensive rebound rate, the share of opponents' misses they secured. Their strength was the perimeter: opponents shot 31.4% from three against them. With every starter gone, there is no guarantee that perimeter defense carries over, while the rebounding weakness lines up badly against a front line this big.
Burton and the ball
Eastern Illinois' defense lived on turnovers last season, forcing them on 19.9% of possessions, 46th nationally. Indiana's backcourt is almost entirely new, so the ball-handling job falls to Burton. He averaged 18.5 points in 10 games at Notre Dame last season and carried a 31.3% usage rate, the share of possessions he finished. If the Panthers' new guards can speed him into mistakes, that is their clearest path to keeping the margin manageable.
Indiana's depth has a few question marks. In preseason, Kalek House was described as dealing with an injury, and AJ Storr and Lamar Washington as not yet eligible; no newer update on any of the three has surfaced. Freshman Trevor Manhertz is expected to be the first-year player who sees the most bench minutes. Eastern Illinois has no reported injuries.
What the 34.5 asks
Indiana is a 34.5-point favorite, and the spread hasn't moved since our feed first recorded it Nov. 1. The total has dipped from 143.5 to 142.5.
A margin that wide is harder to reach in a slow game, and neither program played fast last season: Indiana ranked 275th in pace and Eastern Illinois 233rd. Whether the Hoosiers cover depends less on tempo than on how quickly five new starters find each other. Preseason expectations for Indiana are moderate, with a No. 47 KenPom ranking and a 9th-place pick in the Big Ten media poll. Against an opponent this new, that still projects as a lopsided night.
