East Texas A&M Lions vs Oklahoma Sooners prediction: Oklahoma's veteran transfer haul opens against a nearly new East Texas A&M
The Sooners bring back a scoring core and added proven starters, while the Lions return almost none of last season's production. That gap is what a 31.5-point spread is pricing.
| Spread | Oklahoma -30 |
|---|---|
| Total (over/under) | 147 |
- Oklahoma's older, deeper roster should control the glass and pull away; the size of the margin depends on how fast the new pieces mesh.
- Duke Brennan on the offensive glass against an East Texas A&M frontcourt replacing nearly everyone; the Lions ranked 280th in defensive rebounding last season.
- Oklahoma moved from -29 to -31.5. East Texas A&M returns just 6.8% of last season's minutes, the figure that bears most on that number.
One rebuild, one restart
Porter Moser's sixth Oklahoma team was assembled to win now. East Texas A&M's was assembled from scratch. Tonight's opener in Norman (7 p.m. CT, SECN+) pits a roster stacked with fifth-year players against one that bettors can barely scout.
The Lions return 6.8% of last season's minutes and 2.0% of their points. Their top returner, guard Evan Phelps, played 14.1 minutes a game. That makes last season's 11-21 finish a weak guide to this group, for better or worse. The clearest piece is App State transfer Alonzo Dodd, who scored 13.8 points a game and started every one of his 32 games there. Beyond him, the rotation is largely unknown. Jaret von Rosenberg's team played an exhibition against Tarleton on Oct. 18, and no lineup details surfaced from it.
Oklahoma brings back 38.4% of its minutes, led by Xzayvier Brown, who scored 15.4 points a game last season, and forward Derrion Reid. Around them sits a transfer class of proven starters: B.J. Edwards from SMU, Duke Brennan from Villanova, Tyler Hendricks from Utah Valley, plus Pop Isaacs and Khani Rooths. The roster carries five fifth-year seniors and two four-year seniors.
Where the Sooners pull away
Oklahoma's offense finished last season 22nd of 365 in adjusted efficiency (points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents). East Texas A&M's defense ranked 239th. The Sooners lost Nijel Pack, but Brown, Reid and the new guards give them plenty of shot creation.
The glass is the cleaner mismatch. Brennan pulled down 10.2 rebounds a game at Villanova. East Texas A&M's defensive rebound rate, the share of opponent misses it collected, was 68.0% last season, 280th nationally. Second chances can stretch a lead quickly.
Ball security is the other lever. The Lions committed turnovers on 18.8% of possessions last season, 306th in the country. The caveat cuts both ways: their handlers are mostly new, and Oklahoma's defense ranked just 282nd in forcing turnovers, so this edge depends on the Sooners getting more aggressive.
The three-point question
East Texas A&M's identity last season was volume from deep. It took 46.4% of its shots from three, 41st nationally, but made only 32.3% of them. Dodd, the likely focal point, shot 28% from three at App State, so the Lions may need to find shooters among their newcomers.
Oklahoma's own shooting should look different without Pack. Hendricks is the most dangerous new option after hitting 44.8% from three at Utah Valley. If he and Brown get comfortable early, the Sooners can build the kind of lead that covers big numbers.
What the market is pricing
Oklahoma opened in our feed at -29 and now sits at -31.5, with the money moving toward the Sooners. The total went the other way, dipping from 151.5 to 149.5.
The last meeting, in Norman in November 2024, ended 84-56. That came against a different Oklahoma roster and a different Lions roster. The bigger unknown for a margin this wide is Oklahoma's defense, which ranked 281st in raw defensive efficiency last season. If that unit hasn't improved with its new pieces, East Texas A&M's three-point volume gives it a path to hang around late.
